Excitons play an essential role in the optical response of two-dimensional materials. These are bound states showing up in the band gaps of many-body systems and are conceived as quasiparticles formed by an electron and a hole. By performing real-time simu ...

This thesis presents the development, construction, and benchmark of an experimental platform that combines cold fermionic 6Li atoms with locally controllable light-matter interactions. To enable local control, a new device, the cavity-microscope, was crea ...

Dense micron-sized electron plasmas, such as those generated upon irradiation of nanostructured metallic surfaces by intense femtosecond laser pulses, constitute a rich playground to study light-matter interactions, many-body phenomena, and out-of-equilibr ...

A photonic assembly, a laser setup comprising said photonic assembly and a method for performing frequency-modulated continuous-wave light detection and ranging using said laser setup are disclosed. The photonic assembly (1) comprises an active photonic ch ...

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are the subject of massive interest due to the range of applications they can provide at a huge scale while building on well-established CMOS technologies. One of the critical parameters defining a technology's maturity ...

Optical resonators enable the generation, manipulation, and storage of electromagnetic waves. The physics underlying their operation is determined by the interference of electromagnetic waves, giving rise to the resonance spectrum. This mechanism causes th ...

The pursuit of high-speed and on-chip optical communication systems has promoted extensive exploration of all-optical control of light-matter interactions via nonlinear optical processes. Here, we have numerically investigated the ultrafast dynamic switchi ...

Optomechanical resonators provide a route to interconversion of microwave and optical photons for quantum interconnects. We present a platform comprising a GaP photonic crystal cavity integrated on prefabricated niobium circuits, with mechanical modes at s ...

In this thesis, we mainly utilize silver to construct the meta-atoms. Although suffering from easily oxidized, its excellent lossless property throughout the visible range makes it suitable for study. When preserved properly, silver-made metasurfaces can s ...

Among the two materials families used in nanophotonics, the fundamental mode for metal nanostructures is electric, while that for dielectric nanostructures is magnetic. Consequently, the optical properties of hybrid dimers that incorporate both materials h ...

We propose an all-optical switch based on an asymmetric directional coupler structure with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) layer. The nonlinear optical properties the of ENZ layer are analyzed by hot-electron dynamics process, and the all-optical operating perform ...

Light matter interaction can be boosted by several orders of magnitude by tailoring the photonic environment, thus enabling a wide range of applications. One particular example are plasmonic nanostructures that support localized surface plasmon polariton ( ...

Third-order non-linearities are important because they allow control over light pulses in ubiquitous high-quality centro-symmetric materials like silicon and silica. Degenerate four-wave mixing provides a direct measure of the third-order non-linear sheet ...

Plasmonic nanostructures allow to controllably enhance linear and nonlinear light-matter interactions by concentrating the electromagnetic fields at the scales below the diffraction limit. This feature is highly desired for many applications, e.g. bio- and ...

Plasmonic nanojunctions, consisting of adjacent metal structures with nanometre gaps, can support localised plasmon resonances that boost light matter interactions and concentrate electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale. In this regime, the optical respons ...

We show that optical microcavities drive strong coherent modulations the in co-propagating free-electron beams, with sidebands spanning over 700eV from a sub-mu m-long interaction. The electrons probe the cavity's ringdown time and distinguish the modes sp ...

Optical frequency combs are optical sources, which spectrum consists of a series of equally spaced narrowband frequencies. They made an outstanding leap forward in the accuracy of optical frequency metrology and became an attractive tool for numerous appli ...

We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of near-field binary phase transmission diffractive optical elements (DOEs) in single crystal diamond. Top-hat and arbitrary pattern DOE beam shapers were numerically optimized using ...

We propose and investigate a new type of photonic crystal (PhC) cavity for integrated quantum photonics, which provides tailored optical modes with both confined and extended spatial components. The structures consist of elongated PhC cavities in which the ...

Using the photonic Damascene reflow process, we present single soliton formation in 99-GHz-FSR Si3N4 microresonators of Q-factor exceeding 15 x 10(6), with less than 10 mW optical power. ...
