Over the past two decades, the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of earth-contact structures such as piles, walls, slabs, and tunnels, which simultaneously provide structural support and energy supply, has been studied through various field experiments and ...

In strained mechanical resonators, the concurrence of tensile stress and geometric nonlinearity dramatically reduces dissipation. This phenomenon, called dissipation dilution, is employed in mirror suspensions of gravitational-wave interferometers and at t ...

The objective of this thesis is to develop knowledge and methods to prevent fatigue failure of bridges. The Fatigue Limit State is investigated from both the demand (S) and resistance (R) side. The S-part focuses on reduction of uncertainties through monit ...

System (2) for CO2 capture from a combustion engine (1) comprising an exhaust gas flow circuit (6) having an inlet end fluidly connected to an exhaust of the combustion engine, a heat exchanger circuit (12), a primary exhaust gas heat exchanger (H1) for tr ...

High‐viscosity fluids are often used during hydraulic fracking operations in geo‐reservoirs. Here, we performed dedicated experiments to study the influence of fluid viscosity on fault reactivation and associated induced earthquakes. Experiments were condu ...

Steep mountain streams exhibit shallow waters with roughness elements such as stones and pebbles that are comparable in size to flow depth. Owing to the difficulty in measuring fluid velocities at the interface, i.e., from the rough permeable bed to the fr ...

Wells play a key role in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. They are not only a critical element in ensuring the permanent trapping of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep subsurface permeable formations, but they are also being recognized as an important ...

In living cells, DNA is highly confined in space with the help of condensing agents, DNA binding proteins and high levels of supercoiling. Due to challenges associated with experimentally studying DNA under confinement, little is known about the impact of ...

The aim of the present research is to identify, describe and quantify the principal mechanic-hydraulic relationships during hydraulic transients in pressurized pipe flows in view of improving pipe design and reduce pipe and system failure. Phenomena affect ...

Modern bridge construction all over Europe in the last decades, has highlighted the importance of steel solutions for the design of bridges. Steel bridges have become slender and lighter with the generalisation of welded connections. These features increas ...

Due to the increasing production of volatile new renewable energies as solar and wind, storage hydropower plants have to operate under harsh operation conditions in order to stabilize the electricity grid. As a result, highly transient water pressures occu ...

The present paper approaches fluid-structure interaction by means of a 4-equation model. Experimental data collected from a straight copper pipe-rig lying directly on the lab floor is used for the model validation in terms of wave shape, timing and damping ...

The paper presents the analysis of the effect of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) occurring during hydraulic transients in pipe coils, in particular the main developments and findings. The research work comprises the development of mathematical models, th ...

When modelling the cardiovascular system, the effect of the vessel wall on the blood flow has great relevance. Arterial vessels are complex living tissues and three-dimensional specific models have been proposed to represent their behaviour. The numerical ...

This research aims to enhance the knowledge on stress–strain states of a coiled pipe used for Hydraulic transient experiments. The membrane theory of shells of revolution has been applied for the description of axial and circumferential strains while an in ...

Magneto-Rheological Fluids (MRFs) are smart materials whose physical properties can be controlled by an exciting magnetic field. MRFs are described as Bingham plastics with variable magnetic field dependent yield stress. Thanks to their particular features ...

Interest in patient-specific blood-flow circulation modeling has increased substantially in recent years. The availability of clinical data for geometric and elastic properties together with efficient numerical methods has now made model rendering feasible ...

Fatigue crack growth observed in tubular K-joint specimens, typical of tubular bridge structures, always initiates at the chord crown toe locations whether the applied stress range is tensile or compressive. Even though other locations around the weld have ...

In pipe systems, pressure and flow fluctuations below cutoff frequency propagate as plane waves along pipes. Depending on the pipe length and propagation velocity, resonance leading to high amplitude pressure fluctuation may occur. At low pressure, cavitat ...

In the past, the safety margin for dynamic water pressure loads in steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts was considered as acceptable by using conventional design safety factors. Due to high peak energy demands, existing plants are operating nowadays und ...
