In this paper, we report a fully stretchable liquid metal based sensor system for compliance detection. The system is composed of a strain sensor layer, a gap layer with a hole in the center and a pressure sensor layer from top to bottom. Inspired from the ...

Semantic segmentation algorithms that can robustly segment objects across multiple camera viewpoints are crucial for assuring navigation and safety in emerging applications such as autonomous driving. Existing algorithms treat each image in isolation, but ...

This paper explores the concept of dissipative exposed column base connections by means of anchor rod yielding. This concept aims at enhancing the seismic performance of low-rise steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs). A mechanics-based model is proposed tha ...

Model-based data interpretation has the potential to increase knowledge of structural behavior and support asset management. Models are usually conservative and contain many parameters and sources of systematic uncertainty, which need to be taken into acco ...

With the emergence of more and more torque-controlled robots, the agility of leg locomotion has been promoted to a new level, which, however, seems also to imply that only torque-controlled robots are appropriate for leg locomotion. This paper demonstrates ...

Quantum thermal bath (QTB) simulations reproduce statistical nuclear quantum effects via a Langevin equation with a colored random force. Although this approach has proven efficient for a variety of chemical and condensed-matter problems, the QTB, as many ...

Conventional conductive films that are used as electrodes in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) are susceptible to mechanical deformation, limiting the applicability of such films in flexible wearable electronic devices. To address this limitation, a hy ...

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy improves spatial resolution, but this comes at a loss of image throughput and presents unique challenges in identifying optimal acquisition parameters. Microscope automation routines can offset these drawbacks, but ...

Although reinforced concrete U-shaped walls are popular in construction practice internationally, there is a paucity of experimental research investigating the seismic performance of such salient elements. The present paper summarizes an experimental campa ...

Before performing experiments in the lab with dielectrophoresis (DEP), it is useful to predict the particle and cell responses to the electric field. This requires knowledge of particles or cells properties, which can be obtained from the literature, and i ...

Time series with missing data are signals encountered in important settings for machine learning. Some of the most successful prior approaches for modeling such time series are based on recurrent neural networks that transform the input and previous state ...

Raw exhaust gases may contain notable levels of formaldehyde that can negatively impact the efficiency of after -treatment systems. In the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx over V2O5/WO3-TiO2, formaldehyde was found to react with NH3 to produce HC ...

The analysis of nuclear reactors for performance and safety assessment benefits from the use of computational tools. In this context, this work aims at the development and application of a thermal-hydraulics methodology and related software that respond to ...

Polar codes were recently chosen to protect the control channel information in the next-generation mobile communication standard (5G) defined by the 3GPP. As a result, receivers will have to implement blind detection of polar coded frames in order to keep ...

Systems biology is a multidisciplinary field that weaves together all the basic sciences through the use of computational and bioinformatics tools, to provide a more integrative view of the complex molecular interactions taking place within and among cells ...

Reconstruction of underconstrained tomographic data sets remains a major challenge. Standard analytical techniques frequently lead to unsatisfactory results due to insufficient information. Several iterative algorithms, which can easily integrate a priori ...

Recently developed self-consistent models for beam-wave interaction simulations of a gyrotron oscillator have been extended to study spurious backward-wave instabilities in smooth-wall circular symmetric beam ducts. Starting from a purely metallic case, th ...

In daily adaptive proton therapy (DAPT), the treatment plan is re-optimized on a daily basis. It is a straightforward idea to incorporate information from the previous deliveries during the optimization to refine this daily proton delivery. A feedback sign ...

The remarkable accessibility of modern flying robots makes them an attractive platform for environmental sensing. However, low cost and ease of use are currently incompatible with large payloads, severely limiting the choice of sensor and ultimately modali ...

Diffractive optical elements with a large diffraction angle require feature sizes down to sub-wavelength dimensions, which require a rigorous electromagnetic computational model for calculation. However, the computational optimization of these diffractive ...
