The European Union's Green Deal aims for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To reach this goal, a massive integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the power grid is necessary. As RES become a large part of the electricity genera ...

Low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to balance intermittent generation from wind and solar energy, for example, through frequency regulation. Here, we derive an analytical solution to the decision-making problem of storage o ...

The thesis develops a planning framework for ADNs to achieve their dispatchability by means of ESS allocation while ensuring a reliable and secure operation of ADNs. Second, the framework is extended to include grid reinforcements and ESSs planning. Finall ...

Increasing adoption of smart meters and phasor measurement units (PMUs) in power distribution networks are enabling the adoption of data-driven/model-less control schemes to mitigate grid issues such as over/under voltages and power-flow congestions. Howev ...

Dispatching active distribution networks (ADNs) is an energy-intensive application that, if implemented via battery-energy storage systems (BESSs), can require a large capacity of these assets in order to fully balance the uncertainties caused by the stoch ...

The establishment of a single European day-ahead market has accomplished the integration of the regional day-ahead markets. However, reserve provision and activation remain an exclusive responsibility of regional operators. This limited spatial coordinatio ...

Future low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to stabilize electricity grids and to power electric vehicles. Vehicle-to-grid allows vehicle owners and grid operators to share the costs of electricity storage by making the batte ...

The latest standard "New Dual" power module has been developed for both silicon and silicon-carbide devices to meet the increasing demands in high reliability and high temperature power electronic applications. Due to the new package is just starting to re ...

Solar photovoltaic (PV) is the most rapidly expanding renewable resource worldwide. Yet, its full potential may be hindered by mismatches with market demand and correlated production profiles. In this research, we explore a case study of innovative PV plac ...

The increasing penetration of stochastic renewable distributed generation, energy storage systems and novel loads (e.g. electric-vehicles (EVs)) in active-distribution-networks (ADNs) or microgrids has triggered the need to develop real-time (e.g. minutes ...

This thesis consists of three chapters on informational frictions in financial markets. The chapters analyze problems related to markets' ability to guide real investment, and what drives liquidity. Both problems are important to ensure efficient resource ...

Electricity markets are currently experiencing a period of rapid change. The intermittent nature of renewable energy is disrupting the conventional methods used in operational planning of the electrical grid, causing a shift from a day-ahead forecast polic ...

To limit global warming, the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables is one of the main challenges of this century. This transition will help decrease our CO2 emissions, create jobs, contribute to a broader revenues distribution, improve energy s ...

In this paper, we propose and experimentally validate a scheduling and control framework for distributed energy resources (DERs) that achieves to track a day-ahead dispatch plan of a distribution network hosting controllable and stochastic heterogeneous re ...

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment plans to replace its strip tracker system with a completely new Outer Tracker system to cope with the higher luminosity, compared to Run 2 operation, provided by the HL-LHC. This CMS Phase-2 Outer Tracker will be ...

Wannier90 is an open-source computer program for calculating maximally-localised Wannier functions (MLWFs) from a set of Bloch states. It is interfaced to many widely used electronic-structure codes thanks to its independence from the basis sets representi ...

Most European countries are committed to an energy transition which consists in the substitution of conventional CO2 emitting energy sources by new renewable energy sources (RES), in particular wind and solar power. As opposed to conventional energy source ...

This paper is a study on the use of Machine Learning and Deep Learning to determine the similarity between different musics. The first part introduces the framework used and some concepts of Deep Learning that will be used in the algorithms. The second par ...

During the last decade, distribution networks have experienced essential changes driven by the integration of renewable-energy sources, batteries, electric-vehicle charging stations, etc. This results in not only opportunities, but also operational problem ...

In this article, we use a spectral and statistical analysis of load fluctuations to calculate plausible conditions that an electricity mix of power sources must satisfy to fulfill a variable power demand on a territory. These criteria can be applied to ele ...
