A predictive understanding of soft x-ray near-edge absorption spectra of small molecules is an enduring theoretical challenge and of current interest for x-ray probes of molecular dynamics. We report the experimental absorption spectrum for the electron sp ...

The goal of this thesis is to explore the "neglected" third dimension of layered materials, by studying the interlayer charge dynamics through dc conductivity, optical spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. This project was designed to respond to the gro ...

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is the emission of light consecutive to a mechanical force or stress imposed to a crystalline material. Many inorganic and organic compounds present this phenomenon that is known for over 400 years. Lanthanide and uranyl salts were ...

Understanding and controlling the electronic structure of thin layers of quantum materials is a crucial first step towards designing heterostructures where new phases and phenomena, including the metal-insulator transition (MIT), emerge. Here, we demonstra ...

This thesis presents combined experimental and theoretical investigations of nanoscale, surface-supported magnets based on rare earths (RE) to understand and control the magnetic properties down to the scale of single atoms. We present the effects of adato ...

In this study, we fabricated thin-film resistors using CuMn and yttrium targets by DC/RF magnetron cosputtering. CuMnY-resistive thin films were deposited onto glass and Al2O3 substrates. The electrical properties and microstructures of CuMn alloy films wi ...

The race for performance of integrated circuits is nowadays facing a downscale limitation. To overpass this nanoscale limit, modern transistors with complex geometries have flourished, allowing higher performance and energy efficiency. Accompanying this br ...

We report on an element-selective study of the fate of charge carriers in photoexcited inorganic CsPbBr3 and CsPb(ClBr)(3) perovskite nanocrystals in toluene solutions using time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy with 80 ps time resolution. Probing th ...

SBFT is a state of the art Byzantine fault tolerant state machine replication system that addresses the challenges of scalability, decentralization and global geo-replication. SBFT is optimized for decentralization and is experimentally evaluated on a depl ...

Organometallic multi-decker sandwich complexes containing f-elements remain rare, despite their attractive magnetic and electronic properties. The reduction of the Ce-III siloxide complex, [KCeL4] (1; L = OSi(OtBu)(3)), with excess potassium in a THF/tolue ...

We report the results of a search for the B -> Y(4260)K, Y(4260) -> J/psi pi(+)pi thorn p-decays. This study is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb(-1), collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector a ...

This thesis reports on the growth and on the magnetic characterization of nanostructures made of 3d-4d transition metals and rare earths. In all the experiments the nanostructures have been grown by atomic beam epitaxy (ABE) in ultra high vacuum conditions ...

Cu-Mn-Dy resistive thin films were prepared on glass and Al2O3 substrates, which was achieved by co-sputtering the Cu-Mn alloy and dysprosium targets. The effects of the addition of dysprosium on the electrical properties and microstructures of annealed Cu ...

This paper studies the operation of multi-agent networks engaged in binary decision tasks, and derives performance expressions and performance operating curves under challenging conditions with some revealing insights. One of the main challenges in the ana ...

NaOsO3 hosts a rare manifestation of a metal-insulator transition driven by magnetic correlations, placing the magnetic exchange interactions in a central role. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to directly probe these magnetic exchange interactio ...

In materials where electrons interact strongly, a number of exotic and exciting phenomena arise. The mechanisms at the base of many of these phenomena remain debated, as strongly correlated electron physics represents one of the biggest challenges for mode ...

In modern ultrafast optoelectronic technologies based on wide band gap insulators, the non-equilibrium dynamics of photogenerated charges plays a major role. Unravelling the mechanisms of interaction between these charge carriers and their environment is c ...

In the past half-century, the semiconductor industry has relied on the scaling of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) transistor dimensions and on material and geometrical innovations to increase the computational density. Approaching the end of ...

We investigate the sensitivity of X-ray absorption spectra, simulated using a general method, to properties of molecular excited states. Recently, Averbukh and co-workers [M. Ruberti et al., J. Chem. Phys. 140, 184107 (2014)] introduced an efficient and ac ...
