Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) exhibit excellent properties and are compatible with many shaping techniques due to the liquid character of the preceramic polymers (PCPs). Furthermore, their properties are adjustable by modifying the precursor composition ...

Elastomer composites are prepared by infiltrating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into a porous ceramic structure of nanoparticles. This method differs from the conventional approach, where particles are dispersed into the polymer matrix, since here, the polym ...

Lignin is a promising candidate for the replacement of fossil-based materials, due to its natural abundance and aromatic structure. This same structure poses major challenges to lignin's exploitation for material development. The harsh conditions generally ...

In this study, a hypothetical fast spectrum Liquid Fuel Molten Salt Reactor (LFMSR) core is modeled using the multiphysics C++ code GeN-Foam (General Nuclear Foam). GeN-Foam is based on OpenFOAM, a C++ opensource library for solution of continuum mechanics ...

DYN3D is a well-established Light Water Reactor (LWR) simulation tool and is being extended for safety analyses of Sodium cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. This thesis focuses on the first stage of the development pro ...

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) subjected to mode I fracture show important toughening due to the development of large scale bridging (LSB). Experimental studies of this phenomenon in unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminates using double cantilever beam spec ...

The general license application (RBG) for the Swiss deep geological repository will be submitted in 2024. Furthermore, the decommissioning of the nuclear power plants (NPPs) is coming soon, with the Mühleberg NPP (KKM) scheduled to shut down in 2019. In su ...

Polymer derived SiOC and SiCN ceramics (PDCs) are interesting candidates for additive manufacturing techniques to develop micro sized ceramics with the highest precision. PDCs are obtained by the pyrolysis of crosslinked polymer precursors at elevated temp ...

For an energy source to qualify as sustainable, it must maximize the efficiency with which it uses natural resources while minimizing the amounts of waste it produces. Currently deployed nuclear power plants however use a very limited amount of the energy ...

Structural fibre-reinforced composites based on brittle matrices such as epoxy resins may be subject to short-term subcritical matrix damage that develops with time to the point where it may compromise the integrity of the structure. Currently, components ...

The development of residual strains and stresses is critical to manufacture composite structures with the required dimensional stability and mechanical performance. This work uses Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to monitor strain build-up in carbon fiber ...

The present doctoral research aims at the appraisal of nodal core simulators used for the calculation of commercial boiling water reactor (BWR) cores, against measurements carried out at the Paul Scherrer Institute under the LWR-PROTEUS experimental progra ...

In this study (0-3) P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 composites containing up to 60 vol% of ceramic phase were prepared by solvent casting or compression molding. Their thermomechanical, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties were investigated, and discussed in the li ...

Ferroelectric ceramic – polymer composites have a unique mix of electrical and mechanical properties. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity, a wide range of dielectric constants and high breakdown strength are combined with mechanical flexibility, formab ...

Dielectric elastomers are highly promising as functional materials for the rapidly developing field of flexible actuator and generator technology. They offer a unique combination of low densities and large reversible deformations of up to more than 100% in ...

This thesis presents an investigation of the models describing electrical conductivity in polymer nanocomposites, which consist in more or less random dispersions of nanometric conductive fillers like carbon nanotubes, nanofibers or graphene sheets in a po ...

The reference fuel design currently being considered within the Generation-IV Gas-cooled Fast Reactor (GFR) project is a ceramic plate matrix with a honeycomb inner structure containing small fuel cylinders. The fuel is mixed plutonium-uranium carbide, whi ...

An impregnation model has been developed to evaluate the infiltration phenomena that occur during a novel near net shape preforming method. This process comprises automated deposition of thermoplastic resin and unidirectional (UD) carbon fibres to a pre-pr ...

The present paper is related to the design and neutronic characterization of the principal control assembly system for the reference large (2400 MWth) Generation IV gas-cooled fast reactor (GFR), which makes use of ceramic-ceramic (CERCER) plate-type fuel- ...

Several new fuel designs are currently being considered within the generation-IV gas-cooled fast reactor (GFR) project. One of them, which is the GFR reference design, is a ceramic plate matrix with a honeycomb inner structure containing small fuel cylinde ...
