Macroscopic fundamental diagrams (MFDs) have been widely adopted to model the traffic flow of large-scale urban networks. Coupling perimeter control and regional route guidance (PCRG) is a promising strategy to decrease congestion heterogeneity and reduce ...

Anthropogenic modification of natural landscapes to urban environments impacts land-atmosphere interactions in the boundary layer. Ample research has demonstrated the effect of such landscape transitions on development of the urban heat island (UHI), but c ...

Zoning reform is a crucial tool for cities to adapt to contemporary challenges. However, its implementation remains challenging. Property owners, with a vested interest in the value of their neighborhoods, are sensitive to local developments and the potent ...

Over the course of history, the relationship between cities and their waters has shown different gradients of interweaving, marked by cycles of bonding and distancing. Following a period of complete neglect of urban watercourses, the versatile, multifacete ...

Uncertainty of spillover effects – including property devaluation - from proposed land-use change elicits opposition to local development. This hinders cities’ ability to implement land-use policy aimed at housing affordability and environmental sustainabi ...

In the context of smart cities, ensuring road safety is crucial due to increasing urbanization and the interconnected nature of contemporary urban environments. Leveraging innovative technologies is essential to mitigate risks and create safer communities. ...

Urban proximity planning is foreseen as a solution to foster a “sustainable” city, including economic viability, environmental soundness and social inclusivity. This paper focuses on the inclusivity aspects by questioning the adoption of urban proximities: ...

Understanding visual complexity of urban environments may improve urban design strategies and limit visual pollution due to advertising, road signage, telecommunication systems and machinery. This paper aims at quantifying visual complexity specifically in ...

The aim of my thesis is to provide urban architects and planners with working theoretical elements territorial project of the living. The living and the socio-ecological transition are key concepts in the nature and people paradigm, which asserts a human-n ...

Accurate human trajectory prediction is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, and surveillance systems. Yet, existing models often fail to fully leverage the non-verbal social cues human subconsciously communicate when navigating ...

In this article, we consider the role of landscape as support for an alternative urban mobility scheme and how architecture can help foster a transition towards a low-carbon system. From that point of departure, we trace the genealogical origins of the ter ...

Microscopic traffic flow models can be distinguished in lane-based or lane-free depending on the degree of lane-discipline. This distinction holds true only if motorcycles are neglected in lane-based traffic. In cities, as opposed to highways, this is an o ...

Ridesourcing has driven a lot of attention in recent years with the expansion of companies like Uber, Lift, and many others around the world. Companies use mobile applications connected through the internet to match drivers and their passengers real-time. ...

Accurately predicting weather and climate in cities is critical for safeguarding human health and strengthening urban resilience. Multimodel evaluations can lead to model improvements; however, there have been no major intercomparisons of urban-focussed la ...

Residential ventilative cooling via natural ventilation is influenced by outdoor air pollution. However, relative to climate, outdoor air pollution is not comprehensively considered in determining the ventilative cooling potential of buildings. To assess t ...

The establishment of company towns played a significant role in developing both urban and rural areas in Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By combining historical and urban research, this study provides findings about the industry's pol ...

While migration is intrinsically linked to the arrival to the city, the city is also shaped by migration. It is an in-between space, between "territory" and "home", the border and shelter. However, "urban" hospitality remains a concept that needs to be exp ...

In recent decades, European cultural policies have become inseparable from urban policies, with culture becoming both the new promotional tool for cities aiming to be ‘creative’ (Vanolo, 2008; Vivant, 2009) and the source of unprecedented real estate profi ...

This article explores the conception, design, and implementation of a hypertextual map that we call hypermap. Using Giovanni Nolli's 1748 map of the city of Rome as a backbone, we conducted an experiment based on one of the routes defined by Giuseppe Vasi' ...

Participation in the context of urban planning is growing in the urban and architectural processes of democratic cities. Urban co-creation means working with communities by integrating their needs, giving them the opportunity to collaborate in the transfor ...
