X-rays have been observed in natural downward cloud-to-ground lightning for over 20 years and in rocket-triggered lightning for slightly less. In both cases, this energetic radiation has been detected during the stepped and dart leader phases of downward n ...

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO3 into an ...

Electron cloud continues to be one of the main limiting factors of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the biggest accelerator at CERN. These clouds form in the beam chamber when positively charged particles are passing through and cause unwanted effects in b ...

Machine learning and data processing algorithms have been thriving in finding ways of processing and classifying information by exploiting the hidden trends of large datasets. Although these emerging computational methods have become successful in today's ...

Memory devices have returned to the spotlight due to increasing interest in using in-memory computing architectures to make data-driven algorithms more energy-efficient. One of the main advantages of this architecture is the efficient performance of vector ...

In this paper, we present the characteristics of current, electric fields and modeling approaches of lightning M-component mode of charge transfer. We consider both the classical M-components (occurring after return strokes) and M-component-type ICC (Initi ...

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have found potential applications in many areas of electronics, such as sensing, memory systems, optoelectronics, and power. Despite an intense experimental work, the literature is lacking of accurate modeling of nonvolatil ...

The streamer bursts generated during the initiation and propagation of leaders play an important role in the creation and maintenance of hot discharge channels in air. The most important parameters related to streamer bursts in this respect are the length ...

A current generation type return stroke model which can take into account the possible modifications of the return stroke properties by the soil conductivity at the strike point of the lightning flash is introduced. The model is also capable of incorporati ...

A recent study pointed out that macroscopic dark matter (macros) traversing through the Earth’s atmosphere can give rise to hot and ionized channels similar to those associated with lightning leaders. The authors of the study investigated the possibility t ...

Ferroelectric materials offer a broad range of application-relevant properties, including spontaneous polarization switchable by electric field. Archetypical representatives of this class of materials are perovskites, currently used in applications ranging ...

Experimental data show that in laboratory sparks, X-rays are produced in time synchronization with the meeting of streamers of opposite polarity just before the final breakdown of the discharge gap. It has been suggested that the electric field enhancement ...

Even if Dennard scaling came to an end fifteen years ago, Moore' s law kept fueling an exponential growth in compute performance through increased parallelization. However, the performance of memory and, in particular, Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), ...

A random access memory array including a plurality of local memory group ways, each local memory group way including, a plurality of local memory groups, each local memory group including, a memory column including a plurality of memory cells, a pair of lo ...

HfO2-based ferroelectrics have dramatically changed the application perspectives of polarization-switching materials for information processing and storage. Their CMOS compatibility and preservation of high reversible polarization down to a few nanometer t ...

We present in this paper lightning current measurements, LMA (Lightning Mapping Array) data and fast antenna electric fields associated with upward flashes observed at the Santis Tower during summer of 2017. The LMA network consists of six stations that we ...

Here we use triple-cation metal-organic halide perovskite single crystals for the transistor channel of a flash memory device. Moreover, we design and demonstrate a 10 nm thick single-layer nanofloating gate. It consists of a ternary blend of two organic s ...

The authors present an analysis of different charge transfer modes during upward negative flashes. The analysis includes a total number of 94 pulses that occurred during two upward negative flashes recorded at the Säntis Tower. The pulses included 59 mixed ...

In-memory computing is an emerging non-von Neumann computing paradigm where certain computational tasks are performed in memory by exploiting the physical attributes of the memory devices. Memristive devices such as phase-change memory (PCM), where informa ...

In this thesis, we revisit classic problems in shared-memory distributed computing through the lenses of (1) emerging hardware technologies and (2) changing requirements. Our contributions consist, on the one hand, in providing a better understanding of th ...
