InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a GaAs substrate are very useful photon sources, including single and entangled photons, due to their unperturbed environment. Contrary to self-formed QDs, those grown in pyramidal pits can be well controlled in p ...

Significance: Fluorescence guidance is used clinically by surgeons to visualize anatomical and/or physiological phenomena in the surgical field that are difficult or impossible to detect by the naked eye. Such phenomena include tissue perfusion or molecula ...

Fluorescence confocal laser-scanning microscopy (LSM) is one of the most popular tools for life science research. This popularity is expected to grow thanks to single-photon array detectors tailored for LSM. These detectors offer unique single-photon spati ...

Fluorescence imaging is an indispensable tool to understand how biological networks operate in the complex environment of the living cell. Small-molecule fluorescent dyes offer many advantages including their high modularity, favorable photophysical proper ...

Excitons play an essential role in the optical response of two-dimensional materials. These are bound states showing up in the band gaps of many-body systems and are conceived as quasiparticles formed by an electron and a hole. By performing real-time simu ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) emit near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence that is ideal for optical sensing. However, the low quantum yields diminish the sensor’s signal-to-noise ratio and limits the penetration depths for in vivo measurements. In this ...

Defects in solid-state systems can be both detrimental, deteriorating the quality of materials, or desired, thanks to the novel functionality they bring. Optically active point defects, producing fluorescent light, are a great example of the latter. Natura ...

High-resolution live-cell imaging is necessary to study complex biological phenomena. Modern fluorescence microscopy methods are increasingly combined with complementary, label-free techniques to put the fluorescence information into the cellular context. ...

Imaging live cells in their native environment is crucial for the understanding of complex biological phenomena. Modern optical microscopy methods such as fluorescence super-resolution microscopy are increasingly combined with complementary, label-free tec ...

A fluorescence correlation contrast is a straightforward approach to super-resolution imaging. Combining a SPAD array with a novel detection scheme (ISM), we obtain images with up to x4 times resolution enhancement. ...

Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) is a powerful method for the imaging of cellular structures. This modality delivers nanoscale resolution by sequentially activating a subset of fluorescent molecules and by extracting their super-resolved posi ...

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is an imaging modality often used to monitor biochemical properties of a cell or a tissue. In addition to conventional fluorescence microscopy features, such as selective labeling and non-invasiveness, FLIM e ...

Refractive microlenses are nowadays widely used in optical systems. Characterizing their surface is essential to ensure their quality and to optimize their fabrication process. This is realized by optical surface profilers thanks to their vertical resoluti ...

Optical microscopy is one widely used tool to study cell functions and the interaction of molecules at a sub-cellular level. Optical microscopy techniques can be broadly divided into two categories: partially coherent and incoherent. Coherent microscopy te ...

Background: Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is a family of methods in optical fluorescence microscopy that can achieve both optical sectioning and super-resolution effects. SIM is a valuable method for high-resolution imaging of fixed cells or tis ...

Super-resolution microscopy of defects in a two-dimensional material unveils the transport of single proton charges at solid/water interfaces. Aqueous proton transport at interfaces is ubiquitous and crucial for a number of fields, ranging from cellular tr ...

The design of highly glazed building has become a worldwide trend in modern architecture. However, glazing may induce large thermal loss in winter while increase cooling load in summer, and it may also cause glare. In order to solve the problems, a novel m ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent for the tuberculosis disease, is a bacterial pathogen thought to infect about a quarter of the global human population. It is the first cause of death among infectious diseases, and is most prevalent in low ...

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is one of the main clinical techniques for biomarker assessment on tissue biopsies. It consists in chromogenic labeling with specific antibodies, followed by optical imaging, and it is used for diagnosis and therapeutic targeting ...

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy is widespread, owing to its demonstrated ability to resolve dynamical processes within cells and to identify the structure and position of specific proteins in the interior of protein complexes. Nowadays, subcellula ...
