In this paper, we study sampling from a posterior derived from a neural network. We propose a new probabilistic model consisting of adding noise at every pre- and post-activation in the network, arguing that the resulting posterior can be sampled using an ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building b ...

With an on-going disproportional warming of the Arctic Ocean and the reduction of the sea ice cover, the risk of an accidental oil spill from ships or future oil exploration is increasing. It is hence important to know how crude oil weathers in this enviro ...

Domain generalization (DG) aims to learn a model from multiple training (i.e., source) domains that can generalize well to the unseen test (i.e., target) data coming from a different distribution. Single domain generalization (SingleDG) has recently emerge ...

Direct photolysis and indirect photolysis are important abiotic processes in aquatic environments through which plastics can be transformed physically and chemically. Transport of biodegradable plastics in water is influenced by vertical mixing and turbule ...

Bioaerosols are emitted from various sources into the indoor environment and can positively and negatively impact human health. Humans are the major source of bioaerosol emissions indoors, specifically for bacteria. However, efficient sampling to guarantee ...

Time series of hydrochemical parameters support the investigation of dominant karst hydrological processes and conceptual model structures. Nevertheless, high costs for sample collection and analyses cause hydrochemical data to be rarely available at a suf ...

Hybrid halide perovskites are currently one of the most studied semiconductors. However, due to poor intrinsic and extrinsic stability, further developments to commercialize devices based on hybrid halide perovskites are limited. Many different strategies ...

Bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) constitute the most abundant stromal component of adult human bone marrow. Two subtypes of BMAds have been described, the more labile regulated adipocytes (rBMAds) and the more stable constitutive adipocytes (cBMAds), which d ...

Neural functions operate in tightly controlled conditions that are mediated by multiple electrical and chemical phenomena. Brain disorders such as Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease perturb these conditions and cause a loss of neurons, which impai ...

The present invention describes an imaging system that allows visualization of a wide range of samples both in terms of morphology and in terms of material (e.g. density distribution, varying chemical composition, or anything that induces a change of optic ...

Milk is a complex biological fluid composed mainly of water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and diverse bioactive factors. Human milk represents a unique tailored source of nutrients that adapts during lactation to the specific needs of the developing in ...

Measuring the thermoelectric transport properties of a material is a prerequisite to determining its usefulness for application in waste heat recovery or cooling and the basis for devising improvement strategies. While well-established characterization met ...

Simulation is an informative tool to plan the design and renovation of engineering systems, but its use requires accurate inputs from the users. Inputs such as the unknown future operating conditions might be expected in a system’s lifetime, e.g., the futu ...

Enhanced sampling techniques have become an essential tool in computational chemistry and physics, where they are applied to sample activated processes that occur on a time scale that is inaccessible to conventional simulations. Despite their popularity, i ...

Organic matter (OM) is a major constituent of fine particulate matter, which contributes significantly to degradation of visibility and radiative forcing, and causes adverse health effects. However, due to its sheer compositional complexity, OM is difficul ...

Organic species within atmospheric particles vary widely in molecular structure. The variety of molecules that comprise the aerosol make it rich in information about its sources and chemical life cycle but also make particulate organic matter (OM) difficul ...

Chemical disinfectants employed in water and wastewater treatment can produce a variety of transformation products, including carbonyl compounds (e.g., saturated and unsaturated aldehydes and ketones). Experiments conducted under conditions relevant to chl ...

This paper reports an algorithm to automatically identify the chain of events leading to a disruption, evaluating the so-called reference warning time. This time separates the plasma current flat-top of each disrupted discharge into two parts: a non-disrup ...

While the extant innovation literature has provided extensive evidence of the so-called "demand-pull" effect, the possible diverse impact of demand evolution on product vs process innovation activities has not been yet investigated. This paper develops a f ...
