In this thesis we study stability from several viewpoints. After covering the practical importance, the rich history and the ever-growing list of manifestations of stability, we study the following. (i) (Statistical identification of stable dynamical syste ...

This paper considers the problem of second-degree price discrimination when the type distribution is unknown or imperfectly specified by means of an ambiguity set. As robustness measure we use a performance index, equivalent to relative regret, which quant ...

We propose a principled method for projecting an arbitrary square matrix to the non- convex set of asymptotically stable matrices. Leveraging ideas from large deviations theory, we show that this projection is optimal in an information-theoretic sense and ...

Two related methods for inverting line-integrated measurements are presented in this research paper in the context of the recent deuterium-tritium experiments in the JET tokamak. Unlike traditional methods of tomography, these methods rely on making use of ...

Interactions are ubiquitous in our world, spanning from social interactions between human individuals to physical interactions between robots and objects to mechanistic interactions among different components of an intelligent system. Despite their prevale ...

The progress towards intelligent systems and digitalization relies heavily on the use of automation technology. However, the growing diversity of control objects presents significant challenges for traditional control approaches, as they are highly depende ...

We highlight with first-principles molecular dynamics the persistence of intrinsic < 111 > Ti off-centerings for BaTiO3 in its cubic paraelectric phase. Intriguingly, these are inconsistent with the Pm (3) over barm space group often used to atomistically ...

One approach to understand the chaotic dynamics of nonlinear dissipative systems is the study of non-chaotic yet dynamically unstable invariant solutions embedded in the system's chaotic attractor. The significance of zero-dimensional unstable fixed points ...

We derive a dynamical field theory for self-propelled particles subjected to generic torques and forces by explicitly coarse-graining their microscopic dynamics, described by a many-body Fokker-Planck equation. The model includes both intrinsic torques ind ...

Humans can rapidly estimate the statistical properties of groups of stimuli, including their average and variability. But recent studies of so-called Feature Distribution Learning (FDL) have shown that observers can quickly learn even more complex aspects ...

We study a gravity-driven viscous flow coating a vertical cylindrical fibre. The destabilisation of a draining liquid column into a downward moving train of beads has been linked to the conjunction of the Rayleigh-Plateau and Kapitza instabilities in the l ...

The current research focuses on the prediction of the maximum axial compression load a cylindrical shell is able to bear. This maximum axial compression load is the value at which a cylindrical shell loses stability and abruptly buckles. After the buckling ...

We introduce a distributionally robust maximum likelihood estimation model with a Wasserstein ambiguity set to infer the inverse covariance matrix of a p-dimensional Gaussian random vector from n independent samples. The proposed model minimizes the worst ...

In this thesis, we study systems of active particles interacting via generic torques of different nature. We analyze the phase behavior of these systems, which results from the interplay between self-propulsion, excluded-volume and torques. We tackle the p ...

We highlight fast Li-ion diffusion in hypothetical tetragonal Li10GeP2O12 (LGPO), as a counterpart to the well-known phases of orthorhombic (LISICON) LGPO, thio-LISICON, and tetragonal Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS). We use extended Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics i ...

The global linear stability of a water drop on hot nonwetting surfaces is studied. The droplet is assumed to have a static shape and the surface tension gradient is neglected. First, the nonlinear steady Boussinesq equation is solved to obtain the axisymme ...

Spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of transitional plane Couette flow may give rise to regular turbulent-laminar stripe patterns with a large-scale pattern wavelength and an oblique orientation relative to the laminar flow direction. A recent dynamical syst ...

Probability distributions are key components of many learning from demonstration (LfD) approaches, with the spaces chosen to represent tasks playing a central role. Although the robot configuration is defined by its joint angles, end-effector poses are oft ...

An SEM in situ uniaxial tensile testing setup allowing HR-EBSD acquisition during deformation was used to study the extension twinning mechanism in magnesium(Mg) at the micron scale. Structures were fabricated with two different crystal orientations, respe ...

Efficient sampling of complex high-dimensional probability distributions is a central task in computational science. Machine learning methods like autoregressive neural networks, used with Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling, provide good approximations to s ...
