Emotion is an increasingly important concept in ethics, education, and engineering. It is also important for the intersection of these three domains: engineering ethics education. Despite extensive research being conducted independently in each field, ther ...

First-generation students (FGS) are traditionally underrepresented in higher education, including engineering education. To ensure equity in access and success in engineering, and thereby ensure that we educate responsible engineers who come from a diversi ...

The sharing economy (SE) has gained attention in recent years in both academia and practice. This derives from the economic and social benefits that are often attributed to it, but also from its limited anticipated environmental impacts. However, its role ...

Integrated optics has shown itself very convenient for exploiting nonlinear processes as it results in high confinement factor, freedom of dispersion engineering and compactness. However, the choice of materials is crucial for the development of nonlinear ...

The need to produce more sustainable concrete is proving imminent given the rising environmental concerns facing the industry. Blended cement concrete, based on any of the prominent supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash, ground granul ...

In this work, a systematic approach combining different energy solutions and the time-varying energy demands is used to identify the operating conditions and arrangements for industrial complexes. A kraft pulp mill integrated to an urban district heating n ...

Solid-oxide electrolyzer based power-to-methane is promising for large-scale energy storage as well as biogas upgrading by efficiently converting intermittent renewable power and CO2 (e.g., in biogas) into synthetic methane. Either air or pure oxygen can b ...

Solid-oxide electrolyzer (SOE) based power-to-methane (PtM) system can efficiently store surplus renewable power into synthesis natural gas by electrolysis and methanation. The system performance depends on the operating point of the electrolyzer and syste ...

Swimming coaches provide regular timed and technical feedback to swimmers and guide them efficiently in training sessions. Due to the complexity of swimmers' performance, which is not visible in qualitative observation, quantitative and objective performan ...

The use of biomass gasification for partially or totally replacing methane in the integrated syngas and ammonia production plant is compared with the performance of the conventional route, typically based on steam methane reforming. However, by undertaking ...

Federated learning (FL), as an emerging edge artificial intelligence paradigm, enables many edge devices to collaboratively train a global model without sharing their private data. To enhance the training efficiency of FL, various algorithms have been prop ...

This paper presents a model-based investigation to handle the fundamental issues for the design of co-electrolysis based power-to-methane at the levels of both the stack and system: the role of CO2 in co-electrolysis, the benefits of employing pressurized ...

In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised active salient object detection (SOD) method that actively acquires a small subset of the most discriminative and representative samples for labeling. Two main contributions have been made to prevent the me ...

Biomethane potential (BMP) tests are used to determine the amount of methane that can be produced from organic materials in order to design different components of full-scale anaerobic digestion (AD) plants such as size of the digesters and units exploitin ...

Biogas-based power-to-X technology allows storing renewable electricity, while producing CO2-neutral products. This work investigates the conversion and upgrading of digestion-derived gas mixtures with focus on increasing the operational flexibility of the ...

This article presents a 4-to-5 GHz LC oscillator operating at 4.2K for quantum computing applications. The phase noise (PN) specification of the oscillator is derived based on the control fidelity for a single-qubit operation. To reveal the substantial gap ...

Natural gas (NG) is a suitable alternative to gasoline and diesel fuels to decrease the carbon footprint of the mobility and energy sectors. Although NG is considered a fossil fuel, methane (CH4), its main component, can be produced industrially from power ...

In this work, the use of fuel cells for valorizing agricultural-derived biogas in Switzerland is studied. The Swiss agricultural case is characterized by farms with small numbers of animals (20 cows) and high feed-in tariffs (FIT) for biogas-derived electr ...

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies are re-gaining momentum in a number of sectors including industrial, tertiary and residential ones. Integrated biogas fuel cell plants in wastewater treatment plants and other bioenergy recovery plants are nowadays on th ...

Urban agriculture (UA) encompasses different practices and dissimilar agendas, not all environmentally and socially savoury, ranging from food security to leisure and recreation. Although there is a wealth of literature on UA, little research has investiga ...
