Production of biogas from different organic materials is a most interesting source of renewable energy. The biomethane potential (BMP) of these materials has to be determined to get insight in design parameters for anaerobic digesters. Although several nor ...

We derive an upper bound on the reliability function of mismatched decoding for zero-rate codes. The bound is based on a result by Komlos that shows the existence of a subcode with certain symmetry properties. The bound is shown to coincide with the expurg ...

Using non-rigid-foldable origami patterns to design mechanical metamaterials could potentially offer more versatile behaviors than the rigid-foldable ones, but their applications are limited by the lack of analytical framework for predicting their behavior ...

The main challenges associated with a growing production of renewable electricity are intermittency and dispersion. Intermittency generates spikes in production, which need to be curtailed when exceeding consumption. Dispersion means electricity has to be ...

Biofuels are considered as viable, sustainable and renewable alternatives to fossil fuels. One amongst them is biomethane which has emerged as one of the valuable contributors in facilitating the essential transition towards green energy sources. Industria ...

Natural gas is defined as a combustible mixture of hydrocarbons coming from ground deposits and it is mainly used as a source of energy for burners and motors. Its consumption is increasing worldwide, as this represents a cheap and abundant source of energ ...

Direct methanation of biogas converts the CO2 in raw-biogas to methane, enabling higher methane yield and an elelctricity storage option via Power-to-Gas. As the thermodynamic equilibrium limits the methane yield, unreacted hydrogen has to be removed and r ...

Despite their irresistible success, deep learning algorithms still heavily rely on annotated data, and unsupervised settings pose many challenges, such as finding the right inductive bias in diverse scenarios. In this paper, we propose an object-centric mo ...

The optimal size and location of bioenergy plants with regards to environmental and economic performance are assessed with a spatially explicit value chain model of the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from wood. It consists of several individual ...

Bio synthetic natural gas (Bio-SNG) is being proposed as an alternative to the natural gas of fossil origin (NG) [1]. Bio-SNG consists mainly of CH4 (at least 95%mol), has a high heating value (e.g. 10 kWh/m3N), and respects the quality standards of the NG ...

Test of the unscavenged prechamber ignition system on a 150kW cogeneration engine fed with biogas are presented. The objective was to reach at least 36% in fuel conversion efficiency with exhaust gas emissions lower than the Swiss regulations limits (NOx, ...

This paper considers optimization problems over networks where agents have individual objectives to meet, or individual parameter vectors to estimate, subject to subspace constraints that require the objectives across the network to lie in low-dimensional ...

Stem-cell-derived epithelial organoids are routinely used for the biological and biomedical modelling of tissues. However, the complexity, lack of standardization and quality control of stem cell culture in solid extracellular matrices hampers the routine ...

The 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is a major diagnostic test for cardiovascular diseases and enhanced automated analysis tools might lead to more reliable diagnosis and improved clinical practice. Deep neural networks are models composed of stacked trans ...

Social insects successfully create bridges, rafts, nests and other structures out of their own bodies and do so with no centralized control system, simply by following local rules. For example, while traversing rough terrain, army ants (genus Eciton) build ...

Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests used to determine the ultimate methane yield of organic substrates are not sufficiently standardized to ensure reproducibility among laboratories. In this contribution, a standardized BMP protocol was tested in a l ...

Efficient structured catalysts of partial methane oxidation into synthesis gas were obtained by electrochemical modification of the surface of sintered FeCrAl alloy fibers in an ionic liquid BMIM-NTf, with further introduction of platinum nanoparticles. It ...

This paper studies the problem of learning under both large datasets and large-dimensional feature space scenarios. The feature information is assumed to be spread across agents in a network, where each agent observes some of the features. Through local co ...
