Plasmonic nanoparticles in aqueous solution have long been known to fragment under irradiation with intense ultrafast laser pulses, creating progeny particles with diameters of a few nanometers. However, the mechanism of this process is still intensely deb ...

Establishing a link between atomistic processes and battery cell behavior is a major challenge for lithium ion batteries. Focusing on liquid electrolytes, we describe parameter-free molecular dynamics predictions of their mass and charge transport properti ...

Using two cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometers we have succeeded in fully mapping out the field-dependent evolution of the non-reciprocal magnon dispersion relations in all magnetic phases of MnSi. The non-reciprocal nature of the dispersion manifests it ...

Today's quantum chemistry methods are extremely powerful but rely upon complex quantities such as the massively multidimensional wave function or even the simpler electron density. Consequently, chemical insight and a chemist's intuition are often lost in ...

The existence of a heat-driven spin torque is demonstrated using Co/Cu/Co spin valves embedded in metallic nanowires. Heat currents flowing in one direction or its opposite were obtained by heating optically one end or the other of the nanowires. The spin ...

This study reports the photosensitizing effect/mechanism of FeOx under visible light irradiation and charge transfer to TiO2 on FeOx–TiO2 cosputtered film. The transients which were photo-induced by femtosecond laser pulses at 545 nm (25 fs) were identifie ...

The electrical detection of surface spin polarization in Indium Phosphide (InP) is demonstrated. Using a planar four-terminal architecture on top of semi-insulating Fe: InP (001) wafers, optical orientation is separated from electrical detection. Spin filt ...

Micro-compression experiments were carried out on micro-pillars, with nominal diameter of 10 mu m and height 20 mu m, and fabricated from a high-chromium tempered martensitic steels developed for nuclear applications. An analytical method was proposed to c ...

The ultrafast relaxation of aq. Fe(II)-tris(bipyridine) upon excitation into the singlet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer band (1MLCT) was characterized by femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion and transient absorption (TA) studies. The fluorescence expt. ...

We report the qualitative study of the influence of both elastic compliances and higher order terms of Landau free energy potential on the phase diagram of Pb(Zr0.5Ti0.5)O-3 thin films by using a single domain Landau theory. Although the impact of elastic ...

This laser kinetics features of the electron decay of TiO2 in the presence of the Escherichia coli (E. coli) phosphatidyl-ethanolcholine (PE) and lipo-polysaccharides (LPS) cell wall components were are reported in this study. The interaction of the biomol ...

Improving the conductivity of earth-abundant transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) remains an important challenge that will facilitate the replacement of indium-based TCOs. Here, we show that a hydrogen (H-2)-plasma post-deposition treatment improves the co ...

We describe an experimental setup, which measures transient chemical changes of photoexcited solutes in disordered systems via time-resolved X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) with picosecond temporal resolution. The setup combines a femtosecond amplified ...

l Here we present unique evidence of a k(-1) scaling behaviour in the atmospheric boundary layer and its connection to large scale coherent structures within the boundary layer. Wind lidar measurements were conducted above a lake under cold atmospheric con ...

We present a comparative study of the ultrafast photophysics of all-trans retinal in the protonated Schiff base form in solvents with different polarities and viscosities. Steady-state spectra of retinal in the protonated Schiff base form show large absorp ...

Millimeter-sized cobalt doped rutile crystals with a bi-pyramidal shape are obtained by chemical vapour transport using scroll-type H2Ti3O7 nanotubes as a precursor in which Co2+ ions are introduced by a simple ion exchange method prior to the growth. Desp ...

This paper presents how platforms initially designed to enable the construction of personal learning environments can help teachers and learners to aggregate their own MOOCs from resources freely available in the Cloud under Creative Commons licenses. Comp ...

We report on the increase of the Young's modulus (E) of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) upon high temperature heat treatment. The post heat-treatment at 2200-2800 degrees C in a controlled atmosphere results in a ...

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss worldwide, yet the underlying cause is typically unknown because the inner ear cannot be biopsied today without destroying hearing, and intracochlear cells have not been imaged with resolut ...

A solution-based exfoliation method for obtaining large-area two-dimensional flakes of molybdenum disulfide, followed by the fabrication of electrical devices is presented in this manuscript. The exfoliation method is based on the use of an aprotic solvent ...
