Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

Low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to balance intermittent generation from wind and solar energy, for example, through frequency regulation. Here, we derive an analytical solution to the decision-making problem of storage o ...

Increasing adoption of smart meters and phasor measurement units (PMUs) in power distribution networks are enabling the adoption of data-driven/model-less control schemes to mitigate grid issues such as over/under voltages and power-flow congestions. Howev ...

Estimating the impedance of a grid-connected device or of a grid at the point of common coupling is important for evaluating the interaction between them. Impedance measurement involves a perturbation injection device, that perturbs the system, and a measu ...

This work presents an optimization framework to aggregate the power and energy flexibilities in an interconnected power distribution systems. The aggregation framework is used to compute the day-ahead dispatch plans of multiple and interconnected distribut ...

Environmental concerns are leading to a fast transition in electric power systems towards replacing fossil fuel and nuclear generation with renewable generation. This transition has two significant implications for electric power systems: 1-The capacity o ...

The transmission overload after a disturbance poses significant security risk to the power system. Once it happens, an efficient remedial action must be taken to relieve the line overloads as quickly as possible. The line overload mitigation problem become ...

Future low-carbon societies will need to store vast amounts of electricity to stabilize electricity grids and to power electric vehicles. Vehicle-to-grid allows vehicle owners and grid operators to share the costs of electricity storage by making the batte ...

The establishment of a single European day-ahead market has accomplished the integration of the regional day-ahead markets. However, reserve provision and activation remain an exclusive responsibility of regional operators. This limited spatial coordinatio ...

Solar photovoltaic (PV) is the most rapidly expanding renewable resource worldwide. Yet, its full potential may be hindered by mismatches with market demand and correlated production profiles. In this research, we explore a case study of innovative PV plac ...

We consider rank-1 lattices for integration and reconstruction of functions with series expansion supported on a finite index set. We explore the connection between the periodic Fourier space and the non-periodic cosine space and Chebyshev space, via tent ...

Relying on the power flexibility of distributed energy resources (DERs) located in an active distribution network (ADN), this ADN will be able to provide power flexibility to the upper-layer grid at their point of common coupling (PCC). The power flexibili ...

Islanded microgrids have low real and reactive power generation capacity and low synchronous inertia. This makes them susceptible to large frequency and voltage deviations caused by switching of large loads or equipment failures. These events deteriorate p ...

In this paper, we propose and experimentally validate a scheduling and control framework for distributed energy resources (DERs) that achieves to track a day-ahead dispatch plan of a distribution network hosting controllable and stochastic heterogeneous re ...

To limit global warming, the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables is one of the main challenges of this century. This transition will help decrease our CO2 emissions, create jobs, contribute to a broader revenues distribution, improve energy s ...

This paper presents a method to determine the optimal location, energy capacity, and power rating of distributed battery energy storage systems at multiple voltage levels to accomplish grid control and reserve provision. We model operational scenarios at a ...

We derive the branch ampacity constraint associated to power losses for the convex optimal power flow (OPF) model based on the branch flow formulation. The branch ampacity constraint derivation is motivated by the physical interpretation of the transmissio ...

Electricity markets are currently experiencing a period of rapid change. The intermittent nature of renewable energy is disrupting the conventional methods used in operational planning of the electrical grid, causing a shift from a day-ahead forecast polic ...

This chapter presents the coupling of lightning electromagnetic fields to overhead and underground lines based on the transmission line approximation. The chapter starts with an introductory section in which the advantages and the drawbacks of three approa ...

Coupling of spin waves with electromagnetic cavity field is demonstrated in an antiferromagnet, dysprosium ferrite (DyFeO3). By measuring transmission at 0.2-0.35 THz and sweeping sample temperature, magnon-photon coupling signatures were found at crossing ...
