In this note, we prove that if a subharmonic function Delta u >= 0 has pure second derivatives partial derivative(ii)u that are signed measures, then their negative part (partial derivative(ii)u)- belongs to L-1 (in particular, it is not singular). We then ...

The excitation of toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) using prescribed external electromagnetic perturbations (hereafter 'antenna') acting on a confined toroidal plasma, as well as its nonlinear couplings to other modes in the system, is studied. ...

We consider expected performances based on max-stable random fields and we are interested in their derivatives with respect to the spatial dependence parameters of those fields. Max-stable fields, such as the Brown-Resnick and Smith fields, are very popula ...

River regulation alters the natural flow regime of streams with consequent impacts on terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the riparian zone. The severity of such impacts can be modulated by changing the redistribution rules at water intakes and reservoirs. ...

We study vector-valued solutions u(t, x) is an element of R-d to systems of nonlinear stochastic heat equations with multiplicative noise, ...

A powerful simulator highly decreases the need for real-world tests when training and evaluating autonomous vehicles. Data-driven simulators flourished with the recent advancement of conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs), providing high-fidel ...

The present invention relates to a device for measuring a contact force exerted by an object on a probe comprising a lever and said probe for contacting the object. The lever is pivotably coupled to a body by coupling means. The device comprising a fixed f ...

In an open, bounded subset Omega of R-N such that 0 is an element of Omega we consider the nonlinear eigenvalue problem -Sigma(N)(i,j,=1) partial derivative(i){A(ij)(x)partial derivative(j)u} + V(x)u + n(x,del u)+ g(x, u) = lambda u in Omega integral(Omega ...

Binary dielectric metasurfaces are arrays of sub-wavelength structures that act as a thin layer of artificial material. They are generally lossless and relatively simple to fabricate since only a single structuring step is required. By carefully designing ...

Bioluminescent imaging is a powerful technique that enables imaging in living organisms with high sensitivity, low background signal, low cost and without the need for radioactivity. The emitted photons are produced in the oxidation reaction of luciferin c ...

In the presence of plant-model mismatch, the estimation of plant gradients is key to the performance of measurement-based iterative optimization schemes. However, gradient estimation requires time-consuming experiments, wherein the plant is sequentially pe ...

The goal of derivative sampling is to reconstruct a signal from the samples of the function and of its first-order derivative. In this paper, we consider this problem over a shift-invariant reconstruction subspace generated by two compact-support functions ...

We consider the stationary flow of an inviscid and incompressible fluid of constant density in the region D = (0, L) x R-2. We are concerned with flows that are periodic in the second and third variables and that have prescribed flux through each point of ...

Impregnation time in Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is directly proportional to resin viscosity and inversely proportional to fabric permeability, limiting the use of high-viscosity resins with conventional reinforcements. In this study, we show how to reduc ...

The increasing interest in using statistical extreme value theory to analyse environmental data is mainly driven by the large impact extreme events can have. A difficulty with spatial data is that most existing inference methods for asymptotically justifie ...

This paper reports a method for the simultaneous estimation of unwrapped phase and higher order phase derivatives from a single phase fringe pattern recorded in an optical interferometric setup, thereby overcoming substantial barriers to achieving such mea ...

Following earlier work on some special cases [17,11] and on the analogous problem in higher dimensions [10,20], we make a more thorough investigation of the bifurcation points for a nonlinear boundary value problem of the form -{A(x)u' (x)}'.= f (lambda, x ...

In this paper we study the two dimensional Ericksen-Leslie equations for the nematodynamics of liquid crystals if the moment of inertia of the molecules does not vanish. We prove short time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for the initial value ...

We study the geometrical properties of scale-invariant two-field models of inflation. In particular, we show that when the field-derivative space in the Einstein frame is maximally symmetric during inflation, the inflationary predictions can be universal a ...

Criteria for the bifurcation of small solutions of an equation F(lambda,u) = 0 from a line {(lambda,0): lambda is an element of R} of trivial solutions are usually based on properties of the DuF(lambda,0) at the trivial solutions, where the partial derivat ...
