Gas shales are fine-grained, organic-rich sedimentary geomaterials with ultra-low permeability requiring hydraulic stimulation for gas extraction. Characterizing their water retention behavior is critical for predicting hydromechanical behavior and fluid f ...

We study the drainage of a viscous liquid film coating the outside of a solid horizontal cylinder, where gravity acts vertically. We focus on the limit of large Ohnesorge numbers Oh, where inertia is negligible compared to viscous effects. We first study t ...

This work reports on the tribocorrosion properties of a CoCrMo alloy sliding under imposed passive potential against alumina in sulfuric acid-glycerol mixtures exhibiting different viscosities and thus, in principle, lubrication properties. As expected, we ...

Mechanical watches are complex and sensitive systems that have to maintain a faultless precision over their lifetime. However, this precision can be altered by disturbances occurring during the functioning time, such as friction, lubricant drying, or wear, ...

Fluids are pervasive in the Earth's crust and saturate fractures and faults. The combination of fluids and gouge layers developing along faults can generate fluids of different viscosities. Such viscous fluids were found to influence the reactivation, fric ...

Self-lubricating, gold matrix composite coatings were produced by electrochemical codeposition of carbon nanocapsules filled with ionic liquid (IL) from a colloidal galvanic bath on a nickel electrode. The tribological response of the composite coatings wa ...

Two full-scale PC box girders with typical damage were derived from an in-situ bridge that was in service about 20 years, to understand the strengthening effects of prestressed CFRP plates for the entire bottom slab, casting of a RC layer in composite acti ...

The Laboratory for Applied Mechanical Design (LAMD) designed, manufactured, and experimentally tested a novel recirculation fan for a 10 kWe solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The fan uses oil-free bearings, more specifically herringbone-grooved journal and spi ...

This thesis is dedicated to the analysis of a subclass of interfacial flows, columnlike free-interface flows, from two view angles: (i) the symmetry breaking under geometry-induced or external forces, (ii) their stability against infinitesimal disturbances ...

High-speed small-scale turbomachinery for waste heat recovery and vapor compression cycles is typically supported on gas-lubricated bearings operating close to the saturation conditions of the lubricant. Under particular conditions, the gas film might loca ...

Many natural and industrial processes involve fluid flow at a three phase interface between liquid, solid and gas. When the liquid is forced to move rapidly over the solid surface, the physical mechanisms governing contact line motions are multi-phase and ...

Gas lubricated Herringbone-Grooved Journal Bearings (HGJB) are a promising solution to support high-speed rotors in oil-free turbo-machinery due to their compactness, relatively low losses, no need for lubrication and low wear. Gas lubricated bearings, how ...

We present a multi-physics model for the approximation of the coupled system formed by the temperature-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with free surfaces. The main application is the industrial process of shallow laser surface melting (SLSM), for laser p ...

Motivated by the dynamics of microbubbles near catalytic surfaces in bubble-powered microrockets, we consider theoretically the growth of a free spherical bubble near a flat no-slip surface in a Stokes flow. The flow at the bubble surface is characterised ...

Drainage and spreading processes in thin liquid films have received considerable attention in the past decades. Yet, our understanding of three-dimensional cases remains sparse, with only a few studies focusing on flat and axisymmetric substrates. Here, we ...

Nature and technical applications abound with thin viscous flows, ranging from the lava flow on volcanoes to the lubricating layer around confined bubbles in the microchannels of Lab-on-a-Chip devices. Countless are the examples where coating flows arise i ...

Leidenfrost drops were recently found to host strong dynamics. In the present study, we investigate both experimentally and theoretically the flow structures and stability inside a Leidenfrost water drop as it evaporates, starting with a large puddle. As r ...

Flows of fluids with free surfaces show complex dynamical behavior. Examples include effects like capillary surface waves, topological transitions such as droplet breakup and coalescence, or pattern formation in wetting and de-wetting dynamics. These compl ...

Friction and wear occur at every interface between solid materials. In the design of mechanical devices, it is desirable to be able to quantify and control the amount of friction and wear, as well as predict their evolution with time. ``Tribology'' is the ...
