We present a numerical model for the simulation of 3D poly-dispersed sediment transport in a Newtonian flow with free surfaces. The physical model is based on a mixture model for multiphase flows. The Navier-Stokes equations are coupled with the transport ...

Orbitally shaken cylindrical bioreactors [OrbShake bioreactors (OSRs)] without an impeller or sparger are increasingly being used for the suspension cultivation of mammalian cells. Among small volume OSRs, 50-mL tubes with a ventilated cap (OSR50), origina ...

This study was initiated with the aim to assess the influence of boundary films on the tribologically induced metallurgical transformations and deformations of metals in lubricated contacts and their effect on wear. For this, the tribological behavior of a ...

The lubrication regimes of a contact pair escapement-ruby pallet of a Swiss lever escapement have been investigated combining the theory of fluid lubrication with a well-established kinematic and inverse dynamic multibody model. The kinematic analytical re ...

Reducing friction and wear is essential for building efficient systems with low energy consumption and a long lifetime. Surface texturing is one of the methods to reduce friction and wear, especially in oil-lubricated systems. However, there is still a lac ...

Wear is still the key problem causing the failure and limiting the lifetime of artificial hip joints, especially for the polymer acetabular cup in the metal-on-polymer and ceramic-on-polymer articulations. To reduce the wear, metal-on-metal articulation ha ...

Liquid-gas two-phase flow in flow channels of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells has been investigated extensively in the literature; however, a comparison between the order of the magnitude of the forces occurring within the flow channels has not b ...

This paper presents measurements of the motion amplitudes from flexibly supported Herringbone Grooved Journal Bearing bushings. Measurements taken in four locations on the flexibly supported bearing bushing enable the distinction between the radial and the ...

Surface-grafted polymer brushes are a very attractive class of boundary lubricants. This article presents an overview of the tribological properties of surface-attached synthetic polymers. After a brief review of some mechanistic considerations and a discu ...

Prior modal stability analysis (Kojima et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 27, 1984, pp. 19-32) predicted that a rising or sedimenting droplet in a viscous fluid is stable in the presence of surface tension no matter how small, in contrast to experimental and numer ...
