Background Spinal cord injury leading to paraplegia affects the mobility and physiological well-being of one in a thousand people. Powered exoskeletons can temporarily restore the ability to walk. Their relevance in daily life is still limited because of l ...

In neurology and psychiatry the detailed study of illusory own body perceptions has suggested close links between bodily processing and self-consciousness. One such illusory own body perception is heautoscopy where patients have the sensation of being redu ...

Small-scale soft mobile robots are an attractive solution to gain access to hard-to-reach places. We demonstrate a thin (similar to 4 mm) and flexible mobile robot, 8 cm x 9 cm, mass 4 g, that uses 6 electrostatic zipping actuators with hydraulic coupling, ...

Recent advances in mobile device technology have freed augmented reality (AR) applications from the constraints of desktops, laptops and head-mounted displays. But they are met with a lack of guidelines on the design and user interactions of mobile device- ...

We demonstrate a novel technique of contour-mode suppression of an integrated MEMS-photonic chip up to the first HBAR mode at 17 MHz. The flattened actuation response is critical to the development of compact LiDAR engine or low-noise frequency-agile laser ...

The fluid hammer phenomenon is a devastating incident that can cause substantial damages to the hydraulic systems. If the fluid reaches the vapor pressure due to high pressure gradients, the phenomenon is called column separation. In this study, the overpr ...

Design of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures outlines a new design methodology for digitally fabricated spatial timber plate structures, presented with examples from recent construction projects. It proposes an innovative and sustainable design me ...

In this paper, we introduce a European research project, interactive media with personal networked devices (INTERMEDIA) in which we seek to progress beyond home and device-centric convergence toward truly user-centric convergence of multimedia. Our vision ...

Despite its simplicity, which makes it the most commonly used bioprinting method today, extrusion-based bioprinting suffers from its inability to reproduce the complex tissue architecture found in organs. Generally, this printing method allows for the disp ...

Tensors, or multidimensional arrays, are data structures that can naturally represent visual data of multiple dimensions. Inherently able to efficiently capture structured, latent semantic spaces and high-order interactions, tensors have a long history of ...

Omnidirectional imaging has reached a level of widespread availability driven by recent advances in integrated circuit technology, image sensors, and computer graphics which allow now capturing, rendering and displaying of such type of immersive content in ...

In this paper, a 3D hand model fitting method is presented which can recover the accurate finger positions for a virtual keyboard system. The 3D hand model consists of a detailed polygonal skin driven by an underlying skeleton system. The system uses a str ...

Natural human interactions for Mixed Reality Applications are overwhelmingly multimodal: humans communicate intent and instructions via a combination of visual, aural and gestural cues. However, supporting low-latency and accurate comprehension of such mul ...

We have designed a wearable Mixed Reality (MR) framework which allows to real-time render game-like 3D scenes on see-through head-mounted displays (see through HMDs) and to localize the user position within aknown internet wireless area. Our equipment weig ...

Head‐mounted displays for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) allow users to see highly realistic virtual worlds. The wearable haptics that enable feeling and touching these virtual objects are typically bulky, tethered, and provide only low fi ...

This paper presents a sketching system for 3D organic shapes modeling and animation using virtual reality devices. On the hardware side, it is based on the Haptic Workstation™ which conveys force feedback on the user arms (upper body limbs), and a head mou ...

Transformers achieve remarkable performance in several tasks but due to their quadratic complexity, with respect to the input's length, they are prohibitively slow for very long sequences. To address this limitation, we express the self-attention as a line ...

Omnidirectional (or 360-degree) images and videos are emergent signals being used in many areas such as robotics and virtual/augmented reality. In particular, for virtual reality applications, they allow an immersive experience in which the user can intera ...

The successful design of sensor network architectures depends crucially on the structure of the sampling, observation, and communication processes. One of the most fundamental questions concerns the sufficiency of discrete approximations in time, space, an ...
