In the past years, deep convolutional neural networks have been pushing the frontier of face recognition (FR) techniques in both verification and identification scenarios. Despite the high accuracy, they are often criticized for lacking explainability. The ...

The advancement of face recognition technology has delivered substantial societal advantages. However, it has also raised global privacy concerns due to the ubiquitous collection and potential misuse of individuals' facial data. This presents a notable par ...

The field of biometrics, and especially face recognition, has seen a wide-spread adoption the last few years, from access control on personal devices such as phones and laptops, to automated border controls such as in airports. The stakes are increasingly ...

We consider the problem of defining and fitting models of autoregressive time series of probability distributions on a compact interval of Double-struck capital R. An order-1 autoregressive model in this context is to be understood as a Markov chain, where ...

Cells are the smallest operational units of living systems. Through synthesis of various biomolecules and exchange of signals with the environment, cells tightly regulate their composition to realize a specific functional state. The transformation of a cel ...

This paper investigates the potential impact of deep generative models on the work of creative professionals. We argue that current generative modeling tools lack critical features that would make them useful creativity support tools, and introduce our own ...

In the rapidly evolving landscape of machine learning research, neural networks stand out with their ever-expanding number of parameters and reliance on increasingly large datasets. The financial cost and computational resources required for the training p ...

The ability to reason, plan and solve highly abstract problems is a hallmark of human intelligence. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, propelled by deep neural networks, have revolutionized disciplines like computer vision and natural language ...

Given two jointly distributed random variables (X,Y), a functional representation of X is a random variable Z independent of Y, and a deterministic function g(⋅,⋅) such that X=g(Y,Z). The problem of finding a minimum entropy functional representation is kn ...

Despite the huge success of deep convolutional neural networks in face recognition (FR) tasks, current methods lack explainability for their predictions because of their ``black-box'' nature. In recent years, studies have been carried out to give an interp ...

As an 'early alerting' sense, one of the primary tasks for the human visual system is to recognize distant objects. In the specific context of facial identification, this ecologically important task has received surprisingly little attention. Most studies ...

Learning-based outlier (mismatched correspondence) rejection for robust 3D registration generally formulates the outlier removal as an inlier/outlier classification problem. The core for this to be successful is to learn the discriminative inlier/outlier f ...

Despite the significant progress in recent years, deep face recognition is often treated as a "black box" and has been criticized for lacking explainability. It becomes increasingly important to understand the characteristics and decisions of deep face rec ...

In this paper, we consider electric vehicle charging facilities that offer various levels of service, i.e., charging rates, for varying prices such that rational users choose a level of service that minimizes the total cost to themselves including an oppor ...

This work presents a new computational optimization framework for the robust control of parks of Wave Energy Converters (WEC) in irregular waves. The power of WEC parks is maximized with respect to the individual control damping and stiffness coefficients ...

State-of-the-art face recognition systems require vast amounts of labeled training data. Given the priority of privacy in face recognition applications, the data is limited to celebrity web crawls, which have issues such as limited numbers of identities. O ...

Recently, it has been exposed that some modern facial recognition systems could discriminate specific demographic groups and may lead to unfair attention with respect to various facial attributes such as gender and origin. The main reason are the biases in ...

Forecasting is a capability inherent in humans when navigating. Humans routinely plan their paths, considering the potential future movements of those around them. Similarly, to achieve comparable sophistication and safety, autonomous systems must embrace ...

Research on schizophrenia typically focuses on one paradigm for which clear-cut differences between patients and controls are established. Great efforts are made to understand the underlying genetical, neurophysiological, and cognitive mechanisms, which ev ...

In this paper we use the Riemann zeta distribution to give a new proof of the Erdos-Kac Central Limit Theorem. That is, if zeta(s) = Sigma(n >= 1) (1)(s)(n) , s > 1, then we consider the random variable X-s with P(X-s = n) = (1) (zeta) ( ...
