Beliefs inform the behaviour of forward-thinking agents in complex environments. Recently, sequential Bayesian inference has emerged as a mechanism to study belief formation among agents adapting to dynamical conditions. However, we lack critical theory to ...

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a broadly distributed interbacterial weapon that can be used to eliminate competing bacterial populations. Although unarmed target populations are typically used to study T6SS function in vitro, bacteria most likely e ...

A multi-agent system consists of a collection of decision-making or learning agents subjected to streaming observations from some real-world phenomenon. The goal of the system is to solve some global learning or optimization problem in a distributed or dec ...

We generalize the bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) processing model to make it better support agent-based simulations. Such simulations frequently exhibit hierarchical structure in their communication patterns which can be exploited to improve performance. ...

Agent-based simulations have been widely applied in many disciplines, by scientists and engineers alike. Scientists use agent-based simulations to tackle global problems, including alleviating poverty, reducing violence, and predicting the impact of pandem ...

This article reviews significant advances in networked signal and information processing (SIP), which have enabled in the last 25 years extending decision making and inference, optimization, control, and learning to the increasingly ubiquitous environments ...

In multi-agent reinforcement learning, multiple agents learn simultaneously while interacting with a common environment and each other. Since the agents adapt their policies during learning, not only the behavior of a single agent becomes non-stationary, b ...

Within the extracellular matrix, matricellular proteins are dynamically expressed nonstructural proteins that interact with cell surface receptors, growth factors, and proteases, as well as with structural matrix proteins. The cellular communication networ ...

Research problem: Housing is responsible for a considerable part of global resource consumption. In Switzerland, it accounts for almost one third of the country's CO2 emissions and half of the total energy demand. Thus, housing plays an important role in t ...

In this paper, we introduce a new class of potential fields, i.e., meta navigation functions (MNFs) to coordinate multi-agent systems. Thanks to the MNF formulation, agents can contribute to each other's coordination via partial and/or total associations, ...

We consider the problem of making a multi-agent system (MAS) resilient to Byzantine failures through replication. We consider a very general model of MAS, where randomness can be involved in the behavior of each agent. We propose the first universal scheme ...

The role played by international migration and its interactions with other demographic components in the process of city growth remains underappreciated. We analyze trends in natural increase and in net internal and international migration in Zurich during ...

Policymaking is a complex process that has been studied using policy process theories almost exclusively. These theories have been built using a large number of qualitative cases. Such methods are useful for theory building but remain limited for theory ex ...

The interaction between residential preferences and dwellings is a complex system whose function thus far remains insufficiently explored. In this paper, we investigate housing functions as orchestrators of households’ residential mobility in the context o ...

Consensusability of multi-agent systems (MASs) certifies the existence of a distributed controller capable of driving the states of each subsystem to a consensus value. We study the consensusability of linear interconnected MASs (LIMASs) where, as in sever ...

This work studies the learning abilities of agents sharing partial beliefs over social networks. The agents observe data that could have risen from one of several hypotheses and interact locally to decide whether the observations they are receiving have ri ...

Adaptation and learning over multi-agent networks is a topic of great relevance with important implications. Elaborating on previous works on single-task networks engaged in decision problems, here we consider the multi-task version in the challenging scen ...

The response of microbes to external signals is mediated by biochemical networks with intrinsic time scales. These time scales give rise to a memory that impacts cellular behaviour. Here we study theoretically the role of cellular memory in Escherichia col ...

Federated learning has emerged as an umbrella term for centralized coordination strategies in multi-agent environments. While many federated learning architectures process data in an online manner, and are hence adaptive by nature, most performance analyse ...
