Using data on international equity portfolio allocations by U.S. mutual funds, we estimate a portfolio expression derived from a standard mean-variance portfolio model extended with portfolio frictions. The optimal portfolio depends on the previous month a ...

The present invention relates to a method for operating a resonant power converter (1) having a primary stage (2) and a secondary stage (3) at least one of which is actively operated and includes a half-bridge or full-bridge inverter (21) having a pull-up ...

We propose an all-optical switch based on an asymmetric directional coupler structure with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) layer. The nonlinear optical properties the of ENZ layer are analyzed by hot-electron dynamics process, and the all-optical operating perform ...

We present a vertically movable silicon photonic MEMS switch realized in IMEC's standard silicon photonics platform followed by a dedicated postprocessing for MEMS release. The device has six optical ports, which enable four switching configurations with a ...

Driven by the environmental changes, penetration of renewables and the need for more flexible power grid, DC is reemerging as a basis for future power networks. Already established in the area of HVDC for very long distance transmission, more and more atte ...

There is a world-wide push to create the next-generation all-optical transmission and switching technologies for exascale data centers. In this paper we focus on the switching fabrics. Many different types of 2D architectures are being explored including M ...

This thesis addresses the question of a patent value from three different angles. It comprises three papers on the patent valuation methods. The patent valuation issues are well-known to the world of research and practice. However, the debates over what th ...

DC power distribution systems in marine applications are in the process of being established as the preferred solution for shipboard power distribution systems. This paper presents a bus-tie switch topology for the protection of such systems. The device is ...

In this article, we inspected the bipolar resistive switching behavior of W-based ReRAMs, using HfO2 as switching layer. We have shown that the switching properties can be significantly enhanced by incorporating an Al2O3 layer as a barrier layer. It stabil ...

The ever-increasing requirements for reliability and quality of supply suggest to enable the self-healing features of modern distribution networks. Within the context of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs), new, fast and efficient restoration strategies ca ...

Vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) are widely used for medium voltage applications when low maintenance, long operating life, and large number of allowable switching cycles are required. The accurate estimation of the transient recovery voltages (TRVs) associa ...

The transmission of waterborne diseases hinges on the interactions between hydrology and ecology of hosts, vectors and parasites, with the long-term absence of water constituting a strict lower bound. However, the link between spatio-temporal patterns of h ...

The number of studies on solid state ionic thin films (Nanoionics) has increased dramatically over last decades due to their high potential in micro and nanoscale technologies. Micro solid oxide fuel cells (micro-SOFC), and resistive switching memories (Re ...

Optical circuit switches with fast switching times can provide rapidly reconfigurable bandwidth in data center networks. Silicon photonic switches are attractive candidates with their fast response times and CMOS process compatibility. In this paper, we re ...

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a novel approach to building computer networks. Improved flexibility, simplified management and cost reduction promised by SDN makes many see it as the future of networking. The main insight of SDN is the separation of ...

The vast majority of disruptive innovations in science and technology has been originated from the discovery of a new material or the way its properties have been exploited to create novel devices and systems. New advanced nanomaterials will have a lasting ...

The use of multi-core clusters is a promising option for data-intensive embedded applications such as multi-modal sensor fusion, image understanding, mobile augmented reality. In this paper, we propose a power-efficient 3-D on-chip interconnect for multi-c ...

The emergence of OpenFlow-capable switches enables exciting new network functionality, at the risk of programming errors that make communication less reliable. The centralized programming model, where a single controller program manages the network, seems ...

There has been an evolving electricity market structure starting from the spot market and its derivatives, to several other markets such as the Intraday Market, the Balancing Market and the Reserve Capacity Market. The participation in these markets has ch ...

This thesis encompasses an investigation of organic molecules on metallic substrates as well as a study of electronic and magnetic effects in atomic-sized palladium contacts. For this, a scanning tunneling microscope, operating at 6 K and ultra-high vacuum ...
