Cartilage degeneration, typically viewed as an irreversible, vicious cycle, sees a significant reduction in two essential biophysical cues: the well-established hydrostatic pressure (HP) and the recently discovered transient temperature increase. Our study ...

Cavitation bubbles, extensively investigated in fluid mechanics, present enduring challenges in hydraulic machinery, while holding considerable potential for practical applications in biomedicine and sonochemistry. Despite more than a century of research, ...

Incorporating pressurized fluidic circuits into textiles can enable muscular support, thermoregulation, and haptic feedback in a convenient wearable form factor. However, conventional rigid pumps, with their associated noise and vibration, are unsuitable f ...

The dataset supporting 'Fiber pumps for wearable fluidic systems', published in Science in March 2023. In this work, we present a fluidic pump in the form of a flexible and stretchable tube. These tubes - or 'fiber pumps' - can generate significant fluidic ...

Experimental studies suggest that the fracture toughness of rocks increases with the confining pressure. Among many methods to quantify this dependency, a so-called burst experiment (Abou-Sayed, 1978) may be the most widely applied in practice. Its thick w ...

This study presents an experimental work on dynamic pressures at the bottom of a lined plunge pool that receives overflow rectangular impinging jets and aims at improving the design criteria for pool slabs. The experiments were conducted in a fairly large ...

Fluctuating bottom-pressures on stepped chutes are relevant for the spillway design. An abrupt slope reduction causes a local alteration of the bottom-pressure development. Little information is available regarding the air–water flow properties near an abr ...

We model, via classical molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic phase of ice VII across a wide range of the phase diagram of interest for planetary investigations. Although structural and dynamical properties of plastic ice VII are mostly independent o ...

The design and the grazing flow aeroacoustical characterization of a 2D active liner based on an array of electroacoustic absorbers are presented in this paper. The strategy stands on a pressure-based, current-driven digital architecture for impedance cont ...

Spillways are a requirement for dams’ safety, mainly preventing overtopping during floods. A common spillway solution involves plunging jets, which dissipate a considerable flow energy in the plunge pool. Energy dissipation has to occur in a controlled man ...

The calculation of the impact pressure on obstacles in granular flows is a fundamental issue of practical relevance, e.g. for snow avalanches impacting obstacles. Previous research shows that the load on the obstacle builds up, due to the formation of forc ...

The invention concerns a device for measuring instantaneous sprint velocity, said device consisting of at least one position and/or one velocity sensor and one IMU sensor that respectively provide position and/or velocity and acceleration signals and where ...

The increasing population and the consequential demand for dwelling and recreation areas lead to more frequent conflicts between humans and natural hazards. In mountainous regions snow avalanches are, therefore, still a major threat to humans and infrastru ...

We present a novel concept for the controlled trapping and releasing of beads and cells in a PDMS microfluidic channel without obstacles present around the particle or in the channel. The trapping principle relies on a two-level microfluidic configuration: ...

An implantable blood pressure monitor has two or more elements configured to wrap at least part way around a blood vessel. Changes in pressure within the blood vessel may be sensed by detecting movements of the elements or forces applied to the elements. A ...

The infiltration of a non-wetting liquid, such as molten metal, into a porous solid, such as a ceramic preform, is influenced by the wetting angle of the liquid on the solid. The link between local wetting and the minimum pressure required for initiation o ...

A class of deep Boltzmann machines is considered in the simplified framework of a quenched system with Gaussian noise and independent entries. The quenched pressure of a K-layers spin glass model is studied allowing interactions only among consecutive laye ...

We report a small-angle neutron scattering study of the helical and skyrmion lattice order in single-crystal Cu2OSeO3 under quasihydrostatic helium gas pressures up to 5 kbar. By using helium gas as the pressure-transmitting medium (PTM) we ensure pressure ...

Occurrence of cavitation in hydraulic machines is a challenging issue because it is often accompanied with loss of efficiency, noise emissions, vibrations, and erosion damages. Tip vortices, in particular, are an ideal site for the development of cavitatio ...

At part load conditions, Francis turbines are subject to the emergence of a hydrodynamic instability in their draft tube, referred to as precessing vortex rope. It induces pressure pulsations in the water passages at the precession frequency of the vortex, ...
