Flexure pivot based system (1) being one of: a force sensor, a force limiting device arranged to exert a predetermined threshold force, a torque limiting device arranged to exert a predetermined threshold torque, a programmable mechanical memory, or an acc ...

This article proposes a swirling actuator that uses the electromagnetic radial force and mechanical gears to generate rotational torque. The proposed actuator generates a rotating radial force between an inner stator and a swirler. The gears on the swirler ...

Tunable metasurfaces can shift their resonant frequency through different approaches, one of which is applying mechanical deformations. Here, we show the effects of two key factors on the tunability of deformable metasurfaces; the resonator geometry and su ...

In this paper, we aim at unveiling the underlying physical mechanism for transversal optical forces, appearing due to the simultaneous illumination of a spherical object with two plane waves possessing different polarizations. The appearance of such a tran ...

Over the last decade, nanoneedle-based systems have demonstrated to be extremely useful in cell biology. They can be used as nanotools for drug delivery, biosensing or biomolecular recognition inside cells; or they can be employed to select and sort in par ...

We propose a new control approach for the twisted string actuation (TSA) system; a hybrid control scheme consisting of two nested loops, considering the motor angle and the axial force at the clamping point of the actuator as the system outputs. We show th ...

A novel approach is introduced to determine the time evolution of optical forces and torques on arbitrary shape nanostructures by combining Maxwell's stress tensor with the surface integral equation method (SIE). Conventional time averaging of Maxwell’s st ...

Many manipulation tasks require coordinated motions for arm and fingers. Complexity increases when the task requires to control for the force at contact against a non-flat surface; This becomes even more challenging when this contact is done on a human. Al ...

Sensor system (1) comprising a frame (306) supporting a force-sensing tip (310) arranged to generate a signal based upon a force applied by said force-sensing tip (310) to a material to be tested, characterised in that said system (1) further comprises:- an ...

The temperature measurement of a drill bit during an implantology drilling process is proposed by using a fiber Bragg grating fitted inside the drill bit. Due to the rotational nature of the drilling process, a free-space fiber-optic rotary joint is used f ...

In alpine skiing, understanding the interaction between skiers and snow is of primary importance for both injury prevention as well as performance analysis. Risk of injuries is directly linked to constraints undergone by the skier. A force platform placed ...

This article presents the development and validation of a three-dimensional force and torque semi-analytical model for ironless permanent magnet structures. This method relies on the definition of the magnetic flux density generated by permanent magnets in ...

The mode I delamination behavior of a unidirectional glass-fiber reinforced polymer with a prototype elasto-plastic polyurethane matrix (GF/PU) was investigated and compared with that of glass/epoxy (GF/EP) using double cantilever beam specimens. Fracture ...

A system for interacting with a remote object comprising a wearable jacket for a user, two actuators for supporting arms of the user, motors for causing movements to at least one of a torso and the arms of the user, and sensors for measuring at least one o ...

We propose to control the motion of nanoparticles using phase-gradient metasurfaces. The latter are used to generate surface waves, which put the particles into motion, when illuminated by a normally incident plane wave. We present an initial study of the ...

This paper presents an extension to the Combinatorial Equilibrium Modelling (CEM) design framework. So far, CEM gives the possibility to generate and explore multiple spatial equilibrium solutions in the early conceptual design phase. In addition to the fo ...

Cell migration is a fundamental property of all animal cells which is involved in processes such as embryogenesis, immune response, tissue regeneration and cancer metastasis. Directional migration requires cell polarization which could happen in response t ...

Recent advances in remote powering and telemetry permitted the use of sensors inside body. A few studies have been already done on smart knee prostheses, but all focused on monitoring the in-vivo contact forces and moments. A smart design, compatible with ...

Combination of glass nanocapillaries with optical tweezers allowed us to detect DNA-protein complexes in physiological conditions. In this system, a protein bound to DNA is characterized by a simultaneous change of the force and ionic current signals from ...

The present invention related to an optical force sensing element for microsurgical instruments (22), for measuring force F in three orthogonal directions x, y, z, comprising a monolithic cylinder structure (1), a cylindrical surface (4) and a top surface ...
