Information theory has allowed us to determine the fundamental limit of various communication and algorithmic problems, e.g., the channel coding problem, the compression problem, and the hypothesis testing problem. In this work, we revisit the assumptions ...

5G New Radio (NR) has stringent demands on both performance and complexity for the design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoding algorithms and corresponding VLSI implementations. Furthermore, decoders must fully support the wide range of all 5G NR bl ...

Proprioception tells the brain the state of the body based on distributed sensors in the body. However, the principles that govern proprioceptive processing from those distributed sensors are poorly understood. Here, we employ a task-driven neural network ...

Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoder is among the power hungry building blocks of wireless communication systems. Voltage scaling down to Near-Threshold (NT) voltages substantially improves energy efficiency, in theory up 10x. However, tuning the voltag ...

Commitment is a key primitive which resides at the heart of several cryptographic protocols. Noisy channels can help realize information-theoretically secure commitment schemes; however, their imprecise statistical characterization can severely impair such ...

Cortical dynamics underlie many cognitive processes and emerge from complex multi-scale interactions, which are challenging to study in vivo. Large-scale, biophysically detailed models offer a tool which can complement laboratory approaches. We present a m ...

Previous works on age of information and erasure channels have dealt with specific models and computed the average age or average peak age for certain settings. In this paper, given a source that produces a letter every T-s seconds and an erasure channel t ...

The beginning of 21st century provided us with many answers about how to reach the channel capacity. Polarization and spatial coupling are two techniques for achieving the capacity of binary memoryless symmetric channels under low-complexity decoding algor ...

The recently introduced polar codes constitute a breakthrough in coding theory due to their capacity-achieving property. This goes hand in hand with a quasilinear construction, encoding, and successive cancellation list decoding procedures based on the Plo ...

Since the birth of Information Theory, researchers have defined and exploited various information measures, as well as endowed them with operational meanings. Some were born as a "solution to a problem", like Shannon's Entropy and Mutual Information. Other ...

One of the most important goals in neuroscience research has always been to understand how animals control their behavior. However, the long focus on the role of brain neurons in behavioral control might be missing the full story. In fact, brain-wide fluct ...

Locally correctable codes (LCCs) are error correcting codes C : \Sigmak \rightarrow \Sigman which admit local algorithms that correct any individual symbol of a corrupted codeword via a minuscule number of queries. For systematic codes, this notion is stro ...

This paper investigates the problem of secret key generation from correlated Gaussian random variables in the short blocklength regime. Short blocklengths are commonly employed in massively connected IoT sensor networks in 5G and beyond wireless systems. P ...

Bottom-up models of functionally relevant patterns of neural activity provide an explicit link between neuronal dynamics and computation. A prime example of functional activity patterns are propagating bursts of place-cell activities called hippocampal rep ...

Since polar were ratified as part of the 5G standard, low-complexity polar decoders with close-to-optimum error-rate performance have received significant attention. Compared to successive cancellation (SC) decoding, both SC list and SC flip decoding can i ...

The cerebellum is thought to help detect and correct errors between intended and executed commands(1,2) and is critical for social behaviours, cognition and emotion 3 Computations for motor control must be performed quicklyto correct errors in real time an ...

How does reliable computation emerge from networks of noisy neurons? While individual neurons are intrinsically noisy, the collective dynamics of populations of neurons taken as a whole can be almost deterministic, supporting the hypothesis that, in the br ...

Measuring neural oscillatory synchrony facilitates our understanding of complex brain networks and the underlying pathological states. Altering the cross-regional synchrony-as a measure of brain network connectivity-via phase-locked deep brain stimulation ...

This paper presents an ultra-high-throughput decoder architecture for NB-LDPC codes based on the Hybrid Extended Min-Sum algorithm. We introduce a new processing block that updates a check node and its associated variable nodes in a fully pipelined way, th ...

We study the stability of low-density parity-check codes under blockwise or bitwise maximum a posteriori decoding, where transmission takes place over a binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channel. Our study stems from the consideration of constructin ...
