In the past decade, optical diffraction tomography has gained a lot of attention for its ability to create label-free three-dimensional (3D) images of the refractive index distribution of biological samples using scattered fields measured through holograph ...

In this thesis, we mainly utilize silver to construct the meta-atoms. Although suffering from easily oxidized, its excellent lossless property throughout the visible range makes it suitable for study. When preserved properly, silver-made metasurfaces can s ...

alpha-RuCl3 is a promising candidate material to realize the so far elusive quantum spin liquid ground state. However, at low temperatures, the coexistence of different exchange interactions couple the effective pseudospins into an antiferromagnetically zi ...

We investigate the far-field pattern generation for a micro-lens array (MLA) illuminated under different conditions. Plane wave and Gaussian beam illumination are considered for an MLA with a small diameter of 27 microns and 30 microns period. At these dim ...

Complex yet compact nanoscale mechanisms have largely been absent due to the rather limited availability of components and integration techniques. Especially missing have been efficient interconnects with adjustable characteristics. To address this issue, ...

This research presents a high-speed hardware platform dedicated to emulate electrical power networks for the fault location. The solution implements an algorithm based on the Electromagnetic Time-Reversal (EMTR) principle, which allows locating faults in v ...

Temperature and strain discrimination is experimentally demonstrated in an elliptical-core polarization-maintaining fiber by making use of Rayleigh-based distributed birefringence measurements and the frequency shift of the correlation peak obtained by sta ...

This invention relates to a system and method to determine the distributed birefringence profile along an optical fibre. Birefringence manifests as different refractive indices for two orthogonal states of polarization of the light propagating in the optic ...

This paper presents two W-band waveguide bandpass filters, one fabricated using laser micromachining and the other 3-D printing. Both filters are based on coupled resonators and are designed to have a Chebyshev response. The first filter is for laser micro ...

This thesis presents results of a research on applications of Brillouin dynamic gratings - distributed reflectors that can be dynamically created in an optical fibre by two optical waves. A basic theory of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is introduce ...

The far-field polarization of the optical response of a plasmonic antenna can be tuned by subtly engineering of its geometry. In this paper, we develop design rules for nano antennas which enable the generation of circular polarized light via the excitatio ...

The integration of color filters with microfluidics has attracted substantial attention in recent years, for on-chip absorption, fluorescence, or Raman analysis. We describe such tunable filters based on the micro-flow of liquid crystals. The filter operat ...

The aim of this paper is to present a universal power quality conditioning system (UPQS) named after unified power quality conditioner, which is extended by adding a shunt active filter at the load side. Its main purpose is to compensate for both supply vo ...

The pronounced optical in-plane anisotropy of a suitably designed nonpolar GaN-based microcavity, mainly inherited from the valence-band complexity of wurtzite semiconductors, allows the coexistence of two different light-matter coupling regimes along orth ...

The recent advances made in MEMS and particularly in RF MEMS technology are enabling new architectures for the integration of RF transceivers with improved performance and smaller size. Several fundamental building blocks benefit from the availability of h ...

Optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) is non-destructive interferometric technique that allows measuring amplitude and phase of the light reflected from the device under test. OLCR is a powerful tool for the characterization of the various optical dev ...

In this article, a low-voltage complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) input signal adapter (ISA) suitable for input rail-to-rail operation of various types of analogue basic building blocks is presented. The adapter acts as a pre-stage with infinit ...

Femtosecond laser pulses used in a regime below the ablation threshold have two noticeable effects on Fused Silica (a-SiO2): they locally increase the material refractive index and modify its HF etching selectivity. The nature of the structural changes ind ...

In wireless communications, radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical systems (RF MEMS) technology is attracting tremendous interest across the world as the needs of frequencies gets higher, data bandwidth gets larger and multiple broadband signals have to ...

The development of wireless and mobile communication in the last decade led to the elaboration of new components based on thin films with continually increasing performance and reduced fabrication cost. A fundamental element for mobile communication is the ...
