Being able to work effectively in a team is a vital professional skill but how do students in different disciplines, engineering and hospitality, display their emotions when working together? We investigated their self-reported use of emotional labour stra ...

Traditionally, studies in schizophrenia research employ a single experimental paradigm. The results typically demonstrate a significant difference between patients and controls. Subsequent studies aim to describe the underlying abnormal mechanism at the ge ...

In this research paper, we conducted a study to investigate the connection between three objective measures: Electrocardiogram(ECG), Electrogastrogram (EGG), and Electroencephalogram (EEG), and individuals' susceptibility to cybersickness. Our primary obje ...

The rapid development of wearable biomedical systems now enables real-time monitoring of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Acquisition of these signals relies on electrodes. These systems must meet the design challenge of selecting an optimal set of el ...

Background Socio-emotional difficulties often result from very preterm (VPT) birth. The amygdala's developmental trajectory, including its nuclei, has been recognized as a significant factor in observed difficulties. This study aims to assess the relations ...

Epilepsy, a major neurological disease, requires careful diagnosis and treatment. However, the detection of epileptic seizures remains a significant challenge. Current clinical practice relies on expert analysis of EEG signals, a process that is time-consu ...

Due to the increasing demands of today's fast-paced world, mental health concerns are on the rise, which necessitates innovative approaches to provide support to those in need. Open-domain conversational agents known as chatbots, offer a unique opportunit ...

Background: There has been an increase in interest in emotion in engineering and science ethics education. There is also evidence that emotional content in case studies may improve students’ learning and enhance awareness, understanding, and motivation con ...

Facial paralysis is a highly burdening condition, resulting in a patient's inability to move his mimic musculature on one or both sides of his face. This condition compromises the patient's communication and facial expressions, and thus dramatically reduce ...

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures and affects more than 50 million people worldwide. Implantable medical devices (IMDs) are regarded as effective tools to cure patients who suffer from refractory epilepsy. Se ...

Should we refer to boredom or boredoms? Research on the emotion of boredom sets itself apart from studies on other emotions by posing the question: is boredom a singular concept or does it have multiple facets? In this manuscript presenting empirical resea ...

Objective: To examine whether putatively atypical neuronal activity during internal attention in ADHD yields insights into processes underlying emotion dysregulation. Methods: We used a word processing paradigm to assess neural activations in adults with A ...

Deepfakes - synthetic videos generated by machine learning models - are becoming increasingly sophisticated. While they have several positive use cases, their potential for harm is also high. Deepfake production involves input from multiple engineers, maki ...

State-of-the-art face recognition systems require vast amounts of labeled training data. Given the priority of privacy in face recognition applications, the data is limited to celebrity web crawls, which have issues such as limited numbers of identities. O ...

The Bio Image and Signal Processing (BISP) Technical Committee (TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) promotes activities within the broad technical field of biomedical image and signal processing. Areas of interest include medical and biological ...

Electroencephalography (EEG) data entail a complex spatiotemporal structure that reflects ongoing organi-zation of brain activity. Characterization of the spatial patterns is an indispensable step in numerous EEG processing pipelines. We present a novel me ...

Objective. This study aims to design and implement the first deep learning (DL) model to classify subjects in the prodromic states of Alzheimer's disease (AD) based on resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. Approach. EEG recordings of 17 heal ...

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) affects almost 500,000 people every year, causing complete paralysis of both legs in severe cases, with no current treatment perspective. However, new neuroengineering technologies, such as the Brain Spine Interface (BSI), have eme ...

Despite the significant progress in recent years, deep face recognition is often treated as a "black box" and has been criticized for lacking explainability. It becomes increasingly important to understand the characteristics and decisions of deep face rec ...

Tests used in the empirical sciences are often (implicitly) assumed to be representative of a given research question in the sense that similar tests should lead to similar results. Here, we show that this assumption is not always valid. We illustrate our ...
