Toward bridging classical optimal control and online learning, regret minimization has recently been proposed as a control design criterion. This competitive paradigm penalizes the loss relative to the optimal control actions chosen by a clairvoyant policy ...

Molecular quantum dynamics simulations are essential for understanding many fundamental phenomena in physics and chemistry. They often require solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for molecular nuclei, which is challenging even for medium-sized ...

This paper deals with the initial value problem for a semilinear wave equation on a bounded domain and solutions are required to vanish on the boundary of this domain. The essential feature of the situation considered here is that the ellipticity of the sp ...

Time reversal exploits the invariance of electromagnetic wave propagation in reciprocal and lossless media to localize radiating sources. Time-reversed measurements are back-propagated in a simulated domain and converge to the unknown source location. The ...

A multi-agent system consists of a collection of decision-making or learning agents subjected to streaming observations from some real-world phenomenon. The goal of the system is to solve some global learning or optimization problem in a distributed or dec ...

The progress towards intelligent systems and digitalization relies heavily on the use of automation technology. However, the growing diversity of control objects presents significant challenges for traditional control approaches, as they are highly depende ...

In engineering, oscillatory instabilities and resonances are often considered undesirable flow features and measures are taken to avoid them. This may include avoiding certain parametric regions or implementing control and mitigation strategies. However, t ...

Functional data are typically modeled as sample paths of smooth stochastic processes in order to mitigate the fact that they are often observed discretely and noisily, occasionally irregularly and sparsely. The smoothness assumption is imposed to allow for ...

We study the asymptotic stability of a two-dimensional mean-field equation, which takes the form of a nonlocal transport equation and generalizes the time-elapsed neuron network model by the inclusion of a leaky memory variable. This additional variable ca ...

State-dependent dynamical systems (DSs) offer adaptivity, reactivity, and robustness to perturbations in motion planning and physical human-robot interaction tasks. Learning DS-based motion plans from non-linear reference trajectories is an active research ...

Soft actuator is the main technology that drives the development of soft robotics as it defines the capabilities of soft machines. One of the key challenges in soft actuator research is to simultaneously produce complex morphing (e.g., surface morphing) an ...

This paper presents an experimental validation of a new design method for adaptive structures that counteract the effect of loading through shape morphing. The structure is designed to morph into target shapes that are optimal to take external loads throug ...

We study the large deviations of the power injected by the active force for an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP), free or in a confining potential. For the free-particle case, we compute the rate function analytically in d-dimensions from a saddle- ...

We formulate gradient-based Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling as optimization on the space of probability measures, with Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence as the objective functional. We show that an under-damped form of the Langevin algorithm perfor ...

Stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and randomized coordinate descent (RCD) are two of the workhorses for training modern automated decision systems. Intriguingly, convergence properties of these methods are not well-established as we move away from the spec ...

A bio-inspired way to model locomotion is using a network of coupled phase oscillators to create a Central Pattern Generator (CPG). The recently developed feedback control method tegotae includes exteroceptive force feedback into the governing phase update ...

We examine a flexible algorithmic framework for solving monotone variational inequalities in the presence of randomness and uncertainty. The proposed template encompasses a wide range of popular first-order methods, including dual averaging, dual extrapola ...

In this paper, we propose a novel distributed fault detection method to monitor the state of a-possibly large scale-linear system, partitioned into interconnected subsystems. The approach hinges on the definition of a partition-based distributed Luenberger ...

Astrobots are robotic artifacts whose swarms are used in astrophysical studies to generate the map of the observable universe. These swarms have to be coordinated with respect to various desired observations. Such coordination\footnote{\z{A coordination sa ...

We investigate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a thin viscous film coating the inside of a spherical substrate. The aim of this work is to find and characterize the instability pattern in this spherical geometry. In contrast to the Rayleigh-Taylor insta ...
