The need to produce more sustainable concrete is proving imminent given the rising environmental concerns facing the industry. Blended cement concrete, based on any of the prominent supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash, ground granul ...

Inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising tools in biomedical applications, owing to their inherent physicochemical properties and their ease of functionalization. In all potential applications, the surface functionalization strategy is a key ...

With the decrease in availability of common supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash in Europe, the search for appropriate SCMs should be dealt with locally. A com-bination of abundant low-grade calcined clay and limestone powder has pro ...

Aluminium is the second most widely used metal in the world, with a variety of applications ranging from transportation to food packaging and construction. While many aluminium producers target increased utilization of recycled aluminium to produce rolled ...

The aluminium remelting industry relies on natural gas to transform recycled aluminium into aluminium feedstock, entailing significant atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also affected as they are used as sinks of waste heat from the casting proces ...

The reaction kinetics of the alkali silica reaction depends on the composition of the pore solution. The evolution of the pore solution composition in different cement pastes and concretes was studied. Pastes containing silica fume or metakaolin had the lo ...

The dissolution kinetics of silica-containing minerals in aggregates influences strongly the process of ASR in concrete. In this paper, the effect of different ions on the dissolution rates of SiO2 (amorphous and quartz) and feldspars at high pH values was ...

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main hydration product in Portland and blended cements, and greatly affects durability and mechanical properties of the hydrated cement. In the presence of Al-rich supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), C-(A-)S ...

The alkali-silica reaction (ASR), also known as concrete cancer, is one of the most prevalent causes of concrete degradation. In this chemical reaction, amorphous silica in the aggregates reacts with alkalis in the pore solution. By absorbing water, hydrop ...

Partially replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with low-carbon supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in blended cement concrete (BCC) is perceived as the most promising route for sustainable concrete production. Despite having a lower environment ...

Materials with thermal-invariant elastic properties are of interest for resonant device frequency and dimensional stability of precision devices. Here, we demonstrate that the temperature coefficient of elasticity (TCE) of amorphous silica can be locally r ...

Understanding the mechanism controlling the sulfate requirement of blended cements is crucial for a successful deployment of these technologies towards a more sustainable industry. Particularly, clarification regarding the role of alumina content on the su ...

This thesis investigates the water vapour sorption behaviour of samples with maximized calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) content. Primarily, the role of heterogeneous and homogeneous cavitation has been studied during the drying of cementitious materials. C ...

This paper investigates the effect of KOH and NaOH on C-S-H structure and solubility. Both KOH and NaOH have a similar effect, they increase pH values and silicon concentrations, and decrease calcium concentrations. At higher alkali hydroxide concentration ...

Reinforcement detailing rules describe the shape, geometrical dimensions, and amount of steel to be placed in reinforced concrete structures. They allow for simple and fast designs, account for several effects neglected in the design, ensure a satisfactory ...

Concrete deterioration is a natural process, which has to be carefully monitored over a the service life of a structure. The Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) is a slow-process degradation, which devel-ops over decades and is therefore difficult to predict. Sin ...

The calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) are without doubt one of the most important hydration products in a hardened cement paste. Giving the complexity of the microstructure that forms by hydration of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and the more recently use ...

The RILEM technical committee 282-CCL: Calcined Clays as Supplementary Cementitious Materials, investigates all the aspects related to calcined clays, from clay exploration and characterization to calcination process, hydration reactions and concrete prope ...

The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is widely considered the most promis-ing approach to reduce CO2 emissions relative to cement production. SCMs are not commonly present in binders used for special applications. On the other hand, due t ...

Alkali-silica reaction occurs in concrete between the alkalis contained in the pore solution and silica in the aggregates. Generation of ASR products gives rise to the internal pressures that cause expansion and cracking. Due to its deleterious effect on c ...
