Defining a universal metric for Quality of Experience (QoE) is notoriously hard due to the complex relationship between low-level performance metrics and user satisfaction. The most common metric, the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), has well-known biases and inc ...

This paper reports on the development of a brief scenario-based challenge to prompt engineering students’ reflection about the broader impacts of their design decisions, and thereby increase their ethical sensitivity and motivation. The game scenario asks ...

Motivated by alternating game-play in two-player games, we study an altenating variant of the Online Linear Optimization (OLO). In alternating OLO, a learner at each round t ∈[n] selects a vector xt and then an adversary selects a cost-vector ct ∈[−1,1]n. ...

The past few decades have seen important efforts to introduce more ethics into engineering education programs around the world, while adapting to the evolution of ethical concerns, notably in relation to digital technology and artificial intelligence. Even ...

In a group, the collective dynamics is governed by the inter- actions between individuals, which can manifest differently depending on the available means of communication. In this paper, we compare 3 conditions of communication affordances (global chat, l ...

Humans often rely on their perspective taking skills to thrive within the world's complex relations and connections. An adequate understanding of others' spatial perspectives can increase the quality of the interaction, not only perceptually but also cogni ...

Humor is an essential human trait. Efforts to understand humor have called out links between humor and the foundations of cognition, as well as the importance of humor in social engagement. As such, it is a promising and important subject of study, with re ...

This work is concerned with the mechanical design and the description of the different components of a new mobile base for a lightweight mobile manipulator. These kinds of mobile manipulators are normally composed of multiple lightweight links mounted on a ...

We consider a group of mobile users, within proximity of each other, who are interested in watching the same online video. The common practice today is that each user downloads the video independently on her mobile device using her own cellular connection, ...

Smartphones are an ideal platform for local multiplayer games, thanks to their computational and networking ca- pabilities as well as their popularity and portability. How- ever, existing game engines do not exploit the locality of players to improve game ...

This paper presents a game-theoretic model for the international negotiations that should take place to renew or extend the Kyoto protocol beyond 2012. These negotiations should lead to a self-enforcing agreement on a burden sharing scheme to realize the n ...

In this paper, we propose an approach for photo album summarization through a novel social game "Epitome" for mobile phones. Our approach to album summarization consists of two games: "Select the Best!" and "Split it!". The goal of the first game is to all ...

As humans appear to be literally wired for social interaction, it is not surprising to observe that social aspects of human behavior and psychology attract interest in the computing community as well. The gap between social animal and unsocial machine was ...

Most civil structures are passive and static. They are designed according to serviceability and safety requirements. When subjected to actions, they generally deflect in a passive manner. For example, they do not adapt actively to external loading. A more ...

Mobile communication, in particular mobile telephony, is a service whose nonexistence nowadays is unimaginable. The ongoing, ever increasing penetration of mobile communication equipment, presently intensified by the transition from second generation1 to t ...
