This work examines the crack-arresting capability of PEI and PVDF thermoplastic interlayers in short-glass fiber modified and core-shell rubber toughened epoxy materials under mode-I fracture loading. Experimental results show that the initial crack can be ...

Hydraulic fractures are used to enhance the hydrocarbon production from low permeability rocks and to measure the minimum in-situ principal stress in rock formations. In these cases, the fracture growth above (or below) the formation of interest is a key m ...

When two objects slide against each other, wear and friction occur at their interface. The accumulation of wear forms what is commonly referred to as a ``third-body''. Understanding third-body evolution has significant applications in industry, where contr ...

Oil -based polymeric resins are widely used in the manufacture of fibre -reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, contributing up to 70 % to their total weight. In an effort to reduce the dependence on oil -based feedstock, bio-based alternatives are being inc ...

Several boreholes were drilled for site comparison of a deep geological repository (DGR) in Northern Switzerland. The main target of the exploration program was the >100m thick Opalinus Clay, the designated host rock encountered at approximately 450 to 100 ...

Sustainable development has emerged as a paramount consideration in various fields of industry, including construction, to preserve the environment and its finite resources. Lightweight structures, such as fiber-polymer composite structures, address both s ...

We employ a novel discrete element method (DEM) force formulation to simulate adhesive wear and assess the effects of material and loading parameters on the properties of the third-body layer (TBL) formed during sliding motion. The study emphasizes the rol ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are a type of soft actuators, generating mechanical displacement when an electric stimulation is applied. DEAs can be described as compliant capacitors, and when a voltage is applied, a compressive Maxwell stress will ...

The development of new adhesives has allowed to expand the application of bonding into the most diverse industrial fields. This review article presents the commonly used experimental methods for the investigation of mechanical performance of adhesively bon ...

We develop an analytical model of adhesive wear between two unlubricated rough surfaces, forming micro-contacts under normal load. The model is based on an energy balance and a crack initiation criteria. We apply the model to the problem of self-affine rou ...

Balsa wood is an appropriate core material for structural sandwich applications due to its high strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratios. However, the mechanical properties vary considerably owing to the inherent scattering of natural wood materials. One a ...

Hybrid adhesives can be developed using commercially available adhesive materials and customized to the required loading conditions. In this paper, SPABONDTM 820HTA (non-toughened) and SPABONDTM 840HTA (toughened) adhesives are hybridized by two strategies ...

Nanocomposites comprising a polymer matrix and metallic nanoparticles (NPs) can merge the structural features of the matrix material with the functional characteristics of the NPs. While such materials are promising for a wide range of applications, their ...

All mechanical systems, naturally occurring or human-produced, are subjected to friction and wear at the interface of solid constituents. Large portions of energy dissipation and loss of material, in every-day life and industrial applications alike, are du ...

The high-entropy alloy (HEA) concept was based on the idea that high mixing entropy can promote formation of stable single-phase microstructures. During the past 15 years, various alloy systems have been explored to identify HEA systems with improved prope ...

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was used to consolidate powders of a Ni-Cr-Fe-Mo alloy (Hastelloy X) blended with 1 wt% Y2O3 nanometric powders. The nearly-dense, crack-free specimens, with and without oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS), exhibit high-aspe ...

Tuning the mechanical properties of metals, including strength, through adjusting the type and/or concentration of added solute elements, has been recognized as an effective way to design and produce materials with desired or optimized mechanical propertie ...

Frictional contacts lead to the formation of a surface layer called the third body, consisting of wear particles and structures resulting from their agglomerates. Its behavior and properties at the nanoscale control the macroscopic tribological performance ...

An experimental investigation of the load-bearing behavior and ductility of FRP hybrid double-lap joints composed of both adhesively-bonded and bolted connection parts was conducted. Amongst other things, the effects of the adherends’ fiber architecture (u ...

Structural loads, especially in-plane compression, may cause local buckling and debonding of the photovoltaic (PV) cells that are mechanically integrated with structural members and this may lead to degradation in their electrical performance. This paper p ...
