Water vitrifies if cooled at rates above 3 × 105 K/s. In contrast, when the resulting amorphous ice is flash heated, crystallization occurs even at a more than 10 times higher heating rate, as we have recently shown. This may present an issue for microseco ...

In minimally invasive surgery, such as cardiac ablation, magnetically steered catheters made of variable-stiffness materials can enable higher dexterity and higher force application to human tissue. However, the long transition time between soft and rigid ...

Crystallization of amorphous layers has been demonstrated under various radically different laser-exposure conditions, including continuous wave (cw) and pulsed lasers. Here, we investigate the specific role of ionization in the crystallization of dielectr ...

We report the formation of arbitrary photoconductive patterns made of tellurium (Te) nanocrystals by exposing a tellurite (TeO2-based) glass to femtosecond laser pulses. During this process, Te/TeO2-glass nanocomposite interfaces with photoconductive prope ...

Bridging the "terahertz gap" relies upon synthesizing arbitrary waveforms in the terahertz domain enabling applications that require both narrow band sources for sensing and few-cycle drives for classical and quantum objects. However, realization of custom ...

The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system is among the technologies applied to exploit waste heat in vehicles. Since common organic fluids have lower latent heat than water, higher mass flow rates are required to convert the same waste heat, considerably incr ...

Materials properties are strictly dependent on their microstructure. The internal symmetries and the disposition of the constituting atoms of a material, which depend on its crystallographic structure, greatly affect its response to mechanical, electromagn ...

Ultrashort laser pulses, i.e., pulses emitted shorter than a picosecond, can tailor material properties by introducing permanent modifications locally in three dimensions. Remarkably, under a certain exposure condition, these modifications are accompanied ...

The motion of atoms is at the heart of any chemical or structural transformation in molecules and materials. Upon activation of this motion by an external source, several (usually many) vibrational modes can be coherently coupled, thus facilitating the che ...

The formation of elemental trigonal tellurium (t-Te) on tellurite glass surfaces exposed to femtosecond laser pulses is discussed. Specifically, the underlying elemental crystallization phenomenon is investigated by altering laser parameters in common tell ...

We experimentally investigate fluctuations in the spectrum of ultrashort laser pulses propagating in air, close to the critical power for filamentation. Increasing the laser peak power broadens the spectrum while the beam approaches the filamentation regim ...

Over the last decades, the progress made in the generation of laser pulses shorter than a picosecond (10^-12 s) has allowed us to reach extreme optical power intensities exceeding 10^15 W cm^-2. This tremendous power has triggered an abundance of original ...

Free-space optics allows for design freedom and control, but miniaturization and manufacturability are limited. Here, we present a method for manufacturing complex miniaturized free-space optical systems that combines contactless femtosecond laser-activate ...

Tip-enhanced optical effects have enabled a wide palette of nanoscale investigation techniques and recently they were successfully used to modify and manipulate matter with nanoscale spatial resolution. We contribute to this latter area by reporting a viab ...

We report on an InP/Si3N4 hybrid integrated ECL that relies on 3D-printed coupling elements such as intra-cavity photonic wire bonds and facet-attached microlenses. We demonstrate 90 nm tuning range, SMSR above 60 dB, and intrinsic linewidths of 979 Hz. We ...

In this manuscript, we describe a simple and accurate method for finding the temporal overlap of the laser pump and electron probe pulse in ultrafast TEM. Our approach is based on the observation that the outline of a nanoparticle blurs at time zero, a phe ...

Interest in bioinspired peristaltic pumps has grown in popularity among the scientific community in the last decade thanks to their extreme flexibility and their intrinsic compliance. In this paper, we propose a soft peristaltic pump exploiting ballooning. ...

Experimental data for the generation of optical frequency combs in magnesium fluoride microcavities with whispering gallery modes at 780 nm are presented. This wavelength corresponds to the normal group velocity dispersion for pumping by a laser diode oper ...

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of ...

Recently, random lasing in complex networks has shown efficient lasing over more than 50 localised modes, promoted by multiple scattering over the underlying graph. If controlled, these network lasers can lead to fast-switching multifunctional light source ...
