The flywheel is a widespread mechanical component used for the storage of kinetic energy and angular momentum. It typically consists of cylindrical inertia rotating about its axis on rolling bearings, which involves undesired friction, lubrication, and wea ...

In this work, we tackle the task of estimating the 6D pose of an object from point cloud data. While recent learning-based approaches have shown remarkable success on synthetic datasets, we have observed them to fail in the presence of real-world data. We ...

Improving light-matter interaction through the exploration of engineered environments is pivotal for the development of high-performance quantum devices. Among these, masers -- analogous to lasers -- are crucial for scientific research and practical applic ...

Here, we introduce a design, fabrication, and control methodology for large amplitude torsional microactuators powered by ultrasound. The microactuators are 3D printed from two polymers with drastically different elastic moduli as a monolithic compliant me ...

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum diagnosis is a fundamental building block for diverse OAM-based systems. Among others, the simple on-axis interferometric measurement can retrieve the amplitude and phase information of complex OAM spectra in a few s ...

It has been observed that achiral nanoparticles, such as flat helices, may be subjected to an optical torque even when illuminated by normally incident linearly polarized light. However, the origin of this fascinating phenomenon has so far remained mostly ...

An electroadhesive gripping system and a method for gripping and manipulating an object are disclosed. The invention provides a novel approach particularly useful to pick fabrics or otherwise flat and flexible objects including a method relying on electroa ...

The study of non-contact manipulation in water, and the ability to robotically control floating objects has gained recent attention due to wide-ranging potential applications, including the analysis of plastic pollution in the oceans and the optimization o ...

Multicellular organisms require very well organized and finely balanced cell-cell communication, adhesion and coordination to ensure the organisms homeostasis. These functions rely on specialized receptors placed at the cells membrane whose binding to thei ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

Modern computing systems are so energy- intensive to make efficient cooling vital for their operation. This is giving rise to a variety of innovative cooling solutions based on a mix of traditional and new techniques. The design and engineering of these so ...

The properties of signal strength and integrated intensity in a scanned imaging system are reviewed. These prop-erties are especially applied to confocal imaging systems, including image scanning microscopy. The integrated intensity, equal to the image of ...

The structure of nucleons is multidimensional and depends on the transverse momenta, spatial geometry, and polarization of the constituent partons. Such a structure can be studied using high-energy photons produced in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. ...

In this thesis, we unveil a third design path to manipulate elastic waves within architected media, distinct from the traditional phononic crystal and locally-resonant metamaterial concepts. The core innovation lies in the concept of nonlocal resonances, d ...

Space-time (ST) wave packets, in which spatial and temporal characteristics are coupled, have gained attention due to their unique propagation characteristics, such as propagation invariance and tunable group velocity in addition to their potential ability ...

The application of quantum algorithms to the study of many-particle quantum systems requires the ability to prepare wave functions that are relevant in the behavior of the system under study. Hamiltonian symmetries are important instruments used to classif ...

In general, there are different, relatively independent forms of orbital angular momenta at a given propagation distance, which might exhibit different dynamic spatial characteristics. One type involves a beam with a helical phase-front that rotates around ...

This chapter looks at the intertwined evolution of two different ideas throughout the past century: that of ‘territory’, that has been reshaped and redefined in the field of architecture and urbanism, and that of ‘digital’, that while becoming dominant, ha ...

Chirality is a structural property of molecules lacking mirror symmetry that has strong implications in diverse fields, ranging from life sciences to materials science. Chirality-sensitive spectroscopic methods, such as circular dichroism, exhibit weak sig ...

Orthorhombic molybdenum trioxide (alpha-MoO3), a newly discovered polaritonic van der Waals crystal, is attracting significant attention due to its strongly anisotropic mid-infrared phonon-polaritons. At the same time, coupling of polariton with its mirror ...
