Ash dieback, caused by the fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, is devastating ash tree populations across U.K. and Europe, with projections indicating that up to 80% of ash trees may die as a result of the disease. The extensive loss of this keystone ...

Machine learning for protein modeling faces significant challenges due to proteins' inherently dynamic nature, yet most graph-based machine learning methods rely solely on static structural information. Recently, the growing availability of molecular dynam ...

Machine learning (ML) enables artificial intelligent (AI) agents to learn autonomously from data obtained from their environment to perform tasks. Modern ML systems have proven to be extremely effective, reaching or even exceeding human intelligence. Altho ...

In the realm of point cloud scene understanding, particularly in indoor scenes, objects are arranged following human habits, resulting in objects of certain semantics being closely positioned and displaying notable inter-object correlations. This can creat ...

Extracting maximal information from experimental data requires access to the likelihood function, which however is never directly available for complex experiments like those performed at high energy colliders. Theoretical predictions are obtained in this ...

The field of biometrics, and especially face recognition, has seen a wide-spread adoption the last few years, from access control on personal devices such as phones and laptops, to automated border controls such as in airports. The stakes are increasingly ...

In this thesis, we study two closely related directions: robustness and generalization in modern deep learning. Deep learning models based on empirical risk minimization are known to be often non-robust to small, worst-case perturbations known as adversari ...

Modern neuroscience research is generating increasingly large datasets, from recording thousands of neurons over long timescales to behavioral recordings of animals spanning weeks, months, or even years. Despite a great variety in recording setups and expe ...

Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ...

We propose a test -time adaptation for 6D object pose tracking that learns to adapt a pre -trained model to track the 6D pose of novel objects. We consider the problem of 6D object pose tracking as a 3D keypoint detection and matching task and present a mo ...

Clustering in education, particularly in large-scale online environments like MOOCs, is essential for understanding and adapting to diverse student needs. However, the effectiveness of clustering depends on its interpretability, which becomes challenging w ...

Given a sequence of functions

f_1,\ldots,f_n

with

f_i:\mathcal{D}\mapsto \mathbb{R}

, finite-sum minimization seeks a point

{x}^\star \in \mathcal{D}

minimizing

\sum_{j=1}^nf_j(x)/n

. In this work, we propose a key twist into the finite-sum minimizat ...

We introduce robust principal component analysis from a data matrix in which the entries of its columns have been corrupted by permutations, termed Unlabeled Principal Component Analysis (UPCA). Using algebraic geometry, we establish that UPCA is a well-de ...

In the past few years, Machine Learning (ML) techniques have ushered in a paradigm shift, allowing the harnessing of ever more abundant sources of data to automate complex tasks. The technical workhorse behind these important breakthroughs arguably lies in ...

Monitoring the health of complex industrial assets is crucial for safe and efficient operations. Health indicators that provide quantitative real-time insights into the health status of industrial assets over time serve as valuable tools for, e.g., fault d ...

In light of the challenges posed by climate change and the goals of the Paris Agreement, electricity generation is shifting to a more renewable and decentralized pattern, while the operation of systems like buildings is increasingly electrified. This calls ...

This study presents a self-supervised Bayesian Neural Network (BNN) framework using air-borne Acoustic Emission (AE) to identify different Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) process regimes such as Lack of Fusion, conduction mode, and keyhole without ground-tr ...

Smartphones enable understanding human behavior with activity recognition to support peoples daily lives. Prior studies focused on using inertial sensors to detect simple activities (sitting, walking, running, etc.) and were mostly conducted in homogeneous ...

Speech recognition-based applications upon the advancements in artificial intelligence play an essential role to transform most aspects of modern life. However, speech recognition in real-life conditions (e.g., in the presence of overlapping speech, varyin ...

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Regression (DAR) aims to bridge the domain gap between a labeled source dataset and an unlabelled target dataset for regression problems. Recent works mostly focus on learning a deep feature encoder by minimizing the discrepa ...
