The combination of palladium salts and bipyridyl ligands can lead to the formation of a large variety of coordination complexes, with different shapes and sizes, displaying a very versatile host-guest chemistry. Increasing their structural complexity remai ...

One of the main goals of organometallic chemistry in the last decades was the activation of small molecule in mild reaction conditions. Even though multiple examples of catalytic cycles able to produce fine chemicals from cheap and abundant sources using t ...

Despite recent advances in the field of cyclic alkyl amino carbenes (CAACs) including a few complementary synthetic strategies affording CAACs with various substitution patterns, the application potential of chiral CAACs to efficiently catalyze asymmetric ...

Recent advances in alkaline earth (Ae) metal hydrogenation catalysis have broadened the spectrum of potential catalysts to include candidates from the main group, providing a sustainable alternative to the commonly used transition metals. Although Ae-amide ...

The generation of catalyst design tools is important for developing both economically and environmentally friendly reactions. This thesis focuses on the use and development of such a tool, molecular volcano plots, which have the ability to estimate catalyt ...

In this thesis, we exploited optical and X-ray pump-probe methods in a synergistic approach to study the interplay of the electronic, spin and structural degrees of freedom in two class of complex systems relevant for solar energy conversion applications: ...

Metal oxide deposition is an emerging synthetic technique for designing heterogeneous catalysts. Depositing a nanoscale overcoat of metal oxide on heterogeneous catalysts can modify their structural and chemical characteristics. Many deposition approaches, ...

The potent nucleophilicity and remarkably low basicity of 1,3,2- diazaphospholenes (DAPs) is exploited in a catalytic, metal-free 1,4-reduction of free ,-unsaturated carboxylic acids. Notably, the reduction occurs without a prior deprotonation of the car ...

Water splitting offers the opportunity for storing solar energy and, thus, producing carbon-neutral and renewable solar fuels. The process, known as artificial photosynthesis, is limited by the electrocatalytic conversion of water into molecular oxygen. El ...

Tailoring the interfacial sites between metals and metal oxides can be an essential tool in designing heterogeneous catalysts. These interfacial sites play a vital role in many renewable applications, for instance, catalytic CO2 reduction. Postsynthesis de ...

Most of our understanding of chemistry derives from atomic-level structures obtained with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Metal centers in X-ray structures of small organometallic or coordination complexes are often extremely well-defined, with errors in ...

Renewable energy supply and energy storage in a closed materials cycle are the urgent global challenges of the 21st century. Carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation over catalysts is a method to produce synthetic fuels from renewable energy in a CO2 neutral cyc ...

The magnetic properties of various families of nanocomposite materials containing nanoparticles of transition metals or transition-metal compounds are reviewed here. The investigated magnetic nanocomposites include materials produced either by dissolving a ...

Perovskite derived Ni catalysts offer the remarkable benefit of regeneration after catalyst poisoning or Ni particle growth through the reversible segregation of Ni from the perovskite-type oxide host. Although this property allows for repeated catalyst re ...

The deactivation of supported nickel catalysts by coking is an important technological subject for many chemical processes, especially when high concentrations of unsaturated hydrocarbons are present in the feed gas. Here, the reversible segregation of Ni ...

Carbo- and heterocyclic structures containing nitrogen-substituted stereocenters are recurrent structural motifs in natural and bioactive compounds, therefore constituting a privileged class of synthetic targets. In this regard, substituted three- and four ...

In this thesis, Ni catalysts derived from perovskite-type metal oxides (PMO, general formula ABO3, A=lanthanide or earth alkaline element, B=transition metal) are investigated as a potential class of materials, which are able to overcome thechallenges of c ...

The photophysics and photochemistry of transition metal complexes (TMCs) has long been a hot field of interdisciplinary research. Rich metal-based redox processes, together with a high variety in electronic configurations and excited-state dynamics, have r ...

Catalysis fulfills the promise that high-yielding chemical transformations will require little energy and produce no toxic waste. This message is carried by the study of the evolution of molecular catalysis of some of the most important reactions in organi ...

Metal organic supramolecular chemistry on surfaces has matured to a point where its underlying growth mechanisms are well understood and structures of defined coordination environments of metal atoms can be synthesized in a controlled and reproducible proc ...
