Dielectric non-linearity and the nature of polarization response of PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 relaxor ferroelectric

Résumé

We investigate the non-linear dielectric properties of PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) single crystals and present the following experimental evidence: (a) the absence of the anomaly in the temperature dependence of non-linear coefficients in the relationship between the electric field and polarization, E(P); (b) large difference between the "ac" and "dc" non-linear effects; (c) non-analytical behavior of non-linear dielectric response and the crossover in its field exponents. The fact (a) clearly evidences against the glassy behavior of PMN. The results (b) and (c) can be understood using the model of the interphase boundary motion in PMN.

Polarisation (diélectrique)

La polarisation (ou plus précisément le vecteur polarisation) est une grandeur physique macroscopique vectorielle utilisée dans l'étude des propriétés des matériaux diélectriques. Elle désigne la densité volumique de moment dipolaire électrostatique. Son unité dans le Système international est le C/m. Ce concept a été introduit par Faraday alors qu'il étudiait le comportement des isolants électriques dans des champs électrostatiques. Dans un diélectrique parfait, il n'existe pas de charges électriques libres.

Susceptibilité électrique

En électromagnétisme, la susceptibilité électrique est une grandeur caractérisant la polarisation créée par un champ électrique (ou le champ électrique produit par de la matière polarisée). Ce phénomène se produit uniquement par l'intermédiaire d'un milieu matériel (souvent un matériau diélectrique), et dans de nombreux cas, si l'intensité du champ électrique utilisé est suffisamment faible ou si le diélectrique en question est isotrope, la polarisation vérifie la relation suivante : où est la permittivité du vide, et où la susceptibilité électrique est un nombre complexe sans dimension.

Relative permittivity

The relative permittivity (in older texts, dielectric constant) is the permittivity of a material expressed as a ratio with the electric permittivity of a vacuum. A dielectric is an insulating material, and the dielectric constant of an insulator measures the ability of the insulator to store electric energy in an electrical field. Permittivity is a material's property that affects the Coulomb force between two point charges in the material. Relative permittivity is the factor by which the electric field between the charges is decreased relative to vacuum.
