Achieving reactive robot behavior in complex dynamic environments is still challenging as it relies on being able to solve trajectory optimization problems quickly enough, such that we can replan the future motion at frequencies which are sufficiently high ...

For the first time, a real-time capable NBI code, which has a comparable fidelity to the much more computationally expensive Monte Carlo codes such as NUBEAM, has been coupled to the discharge control system of a tokamak. This implementation has been done ...

In classrooms, some transitions between activities impose (quasi-)synchronicity, meaning there is a need for learners to move between activities at the same time. To make real-time decisions about when to move to the next activity, teachers need to be able ...

Real-time control of electric grids is a novel approach to handling the increasing penetration of distributed and volatile energy generation brought about by renewables. Such control occurs in cyber-physical systems (CPSs), in which software agents maintai ...

Real-time control systems (RTCSs) perform complex control and require low response times. They typically use third-party software libraries and are deployed on generic hardware, which suffer from delay faults that can cause serious damage. To improve avail ...

This paper presents the integration of an acquisition and computing unit capable of acquiring and processing fast magnetic signals in real time in the control system of the tokamak a configuration variabile tokamak. All aspects of system integration and te ...

The optimal power flow (OPF) problem, a fundamental problem in power systems, is generally nonconvex and computationally challenging for networks with an increasing number of smart devices and real-time control requirements. In this paper, we first investi ...

We address delay faults: faults that cause a software component to take more time for completing an action than a given deadline. Such faults are particularly of interest in real- time mission-critical control applications that use general-purpose computin ...

We consider real-time control systems that consist of a controller that computes and sends setpoints to be implemented in physical processes through process agents. We focus on systems that use commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software components. Set ...

The celebrated distributed computing approach for building systems and services using multiple machines continues to expand to new domains. Computation devices nowadays have additional sensing and communication capabilities, while becoming, at the same tim ...

The desire to operate chemical processes in a safe and economically optimal way has motivated the development of so-called real-time optimization (RTO) methods [1]. For continuous processes, these methods aim to compute safe and optimal steady-state set ...

To increase their dependability, distributed control systems (DCSs) need to agree in real time about crashed hosts, i.e., they need a real-time membership service. In this paper, we prove that such a service cannot be implemented deterministically if, besi ...

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are embedded computers widely used in industrial control systems. Ensuring that a PLC software complies with its specification is a challenging task. Formal verification has become a recommended practice to ensure the ...

A sliding-window k-NN query (k-NN/w query) continuously monitors incoming data stream objects within a sliding window to identify k closest objects to a query. It enables effective filtering of data objects streaming in at high rates from potentially distr ...

We report on the solution of a real-time scheduling problem that arises in the design of software-based operation control of aircraft. A set of tasks has to be distributed on a minimum number of machines and offsets of the tasks have to be computed. The ta ...

A distributed algorithm comprises a collection of sequential-code entities, which are spread over different computers connected to a network. The process of designing a distributed algorithm is influenced by the assumptions we make on the computational env ...
