We develop an exchange rate target zone model with finite exit time and non-Gaussian tails. We show how the tails are a consequence of time-varying investor risk aversion, which generates mean-preserving spreads in the fundamental distribution. We solve ex ...

In this dissertation, I develop theory and evidence to argue that new technologies are central to how firms organize to create and capture value. I use computational methods such as reinforcement learning and probabilistic topic modeling to investigate thr ...

We introduce a new numerical method for the time-dependent Maxwell equations on unstructured meshes in two space dimensions. This relies on the introduction of a new mesh, which is the barycentric-dual cellular complex of the starting simplicial mesh, and ...

Strong gravitational lensing is a powerful probe of cosmology and the dark matter distribution. Efficient lensing software is already a necessity to fully use its potential and the performance demands will only increase with the upcoming generation of tele ...

As the number of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) used in research increases with an incredible speed, health and safety specialists are continuously faced with the challenge of evaluating the risks involved with these materials. Nowadays there is not enough ...

Due to its enormous size and capital base, the insurance industry has the potential to play a key role in countering climate change. To this end, the major capital flows associated with its investment and underwriting businesses would need to be redirected ...

The framework to evaluate the benefit of seismic upgrading of Galanis et al. (2018) is compared to that present in the Swiss seismic code for existing buildings since 2004, updated in 2017. To illustrate the comparison, the example building of Galanis et a ...

Infrastructure (asset) risk management is essential for a resilient environment. Several industries are concerned to improve their building asset preparedness subject to seismic hazard. To this end, the development of software tools that quantify and asses ...

The financial crisis of 2007-2009 drew attention to the essential role of banks for the macroeconomy and to the importance of having a resilient financial sector. A vulnerability in the financial sector spills over to the real economy and can drive it into ...

Small-scale farmers are highly threatened by climate change. Experts often base their interventions to support farmers to adapt to climate change on their own perception of farmers' livelihood risks. However, if differences in risk perception between farme ...

Empirical model identification for biological systems is a challenging task due to the combined effects of complex interactions, nonlinear effects, and lack of specific measurements. In this context, several researchers have provided tools for experimental ...

A theory to predict the initial flow stress of an arbitrary N-component fcc random alloy is extended to predict the additional strengthening when a dilute concentration of a substitutional element is introduced. Assuming properties for the N-component allo ...

The IRGC Framework recommends a holistic, multidisciplinary and multistakeholder approach to risk. It supports processes that aim to provide and structure scientific evidence about a risk in a societal context. It helps decision-makers analyse the major am ...

In stochastic optimization models, the optimal solution heavily depends on the selected probability model for the scenarios. However, the scenario models are typically chosen on the basis of statistical estimates and are therefore subject to model error. W ...

The effect of physical aging and continuation of curing on the physical and mechanical properties of a commercial cold-curing structural epoxy adhesive used in bridge construction has been investigated during the first year. Since adhesive bridge joints ar ...

Compliant mechanisms are of great interest in precision engineering. In this paper we propose a higher order continuation method to help their rigid-body kinematic design. The method helps to investigate the choice of a mechanism configuration through the ...

We report a novel biodegradable piezoelectric composite fabricated from paper and the piezoelectric salt, sodium potassium tartrate tetrahydrate (Rochelle salt, which we term PiezoSalt). The piezoelectric composite is non-toxic and is fabricated free of en ...

This study analyzes three project process for the reconstruction of urban areas destroyed by natural disaster or armed conflict: the village of Gondo in Switzerland, partially destroyed by a landslide, has been refurbished following an architectural compet ...

Confronted with the challenge of improving regulatory performance, many governments in the world are looking for ways to better manage risks, in particular those risks that develop in complex systems, with stakeholders from various sectors, and that are ma ...

The uptake of cadmium (Cd) was analyzed for six different perennial plant species growing in a wooded pasture of the Swiss Jura Mountains, where the soils are geogenically enriched in Cd (4.58 mg.kg(-1) on average (n = 36); maximal value: 16.3 mg.kg(-1)). ...
