Energy balance in a power system must be maintained at all times, regardless of the variations in generation and consumption. Large Pumped Hydro Storage Plants (PHSPs) are introduced to the power system to accumulate the excess of energy during the low dem ...

Efficiency is one of the key performance indexes in the design of electric motors. When considering fully active magnetic bearing machines, this aspect gain further relevance due to the necessity of actively controlling all the remaining degrees of freedom ...

We report an experimental investigation on the influence of electric field, electrode surface area, encapsulation layers and elastomer material on the mean-time-to-failure (MTTF) of single-layer uniaxially prestretched silicone-based dielectric elastomer a ...

The development of new space missions with novel high-performance and very sensitive payloads for Earth observation or scientific missions has imposed considerably tougher requirements in terms of the satellite's pointing accuracy and stability, and thus o ...

With the application requirements of wireless technology in implantable bioelectronics, knowledge of the fundamental limits for implanted antennas becomes critical. In this work, we investigated the variation of maximum power density within simplified body ...

We report an experimental investigation of the lifetime of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) under constant DC actuation, with a characterization setup which allows the monitoring of strain and resistance over time for 6 DEAs in parallel. We show how t ...

High-level synthesis (HLS) tools typically generate statically scheduled datapaths. Static scheduling implies that the resulting circuits have a hard time exploiting parallelism in code with potential memory dependences, with control dependences, or where ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where the long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed to estimate the position of the rotor. Of ...

An accurate epileptic seizure detector using intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recordings, suitable for low-power wearable/implantable applications, is presented. Eleven time-domain features with low hardware complexity are employed in the feature ...

DC power supply systems utilising voltage source converters offer several advantages compared with their counterparts in marine low-voltage DC power distribution networks. In case of a two-level voltage source converter fed by a synchronous generator which ...

The development of new industrial applications has diverted the focus of research towards compacter and faster rotatory drives. These requirements push the classical ball-bearings of electric motors to the limits in terms of operational lifetime and fricti ...

Waste heat recovery (WHR) is expected to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions from trucks. Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems show the highest potential for this application, but still lack efficient small-scale expansion devices, in practice. A novel tur ...

We present the effect of electric field, temperature, humidity, type of elastomer material, and encapsulation on the lifetime of silicone-based dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) under DC electric fields. DEAs are promising soft actuators, but little ha ...

Large-scale patterning for vapor-liquid-solid growth of III-V nanowires is a challenge given the required feature size for patterning (45 to 60 nm holes). In fact, arrays are traditionally manufactured using electron-beam lithography, for which processing t ...

An ultralow-profile circularly polarized (CP) reflectarray (RA) antenna is presented in this article, based on the variable-rotation technique for beam collimation and scanning. Starting from a conventional split-loop element, a new wideband element is des ...

For manufacturing companies, quality management is a key feature for increasing the competitiveness, productivity, profitability, and sustainability of their systems. Quality improvement (QI) methods aim to achieve high-quality parts without reducing perfo ...

We report a state-prepared, state-resolved study of rotational scattering of a diatomic molecule from a solid surface. Specifically, H-2 molecules with 80 meV kinetic energy are rotationally aligned in the j = 3 rotational state via stimulated Raman pumpin ...

Millimeter wave (mmWave) is an interesting research area in recent years. Transition connectors are key components of mmWave passive systems. The commercially available cable connectors are lossy and expensive in mmWave frequencies. In this paper, various ...

In recent years, several industries have widely applied BLDC servomotors for various purposes that they almost need a control system to be accurate and robust. In this paper, we compare an adaptive fuzzy controller and PI controller for BLDC servomotor pos ...

The nonlinear behavior of a rigid rotor supported by herringbone grooved journal gas bearings (HGJBs) was investigated in this study. The two-dimensional narrow groove theory (2D-NGT) was adopted to model the HGJBs. A set of integrated rotor-bearing state ...
