Integrating proprioceptive capabilities in balloon‐type robots holds immense potential to enable safe interactions between humans and machines. These robots, made of elastic or hyperelastic materials, undergo substantial deformations when subjected to chan ...

Facial paralysis is a highly burdening condition, resulting in a patient's inability to move his musculature on one or both sides of his face. This condition compromises the patient's communication and facial expressions, and thus dramatically reduces his ...

A critical role of online platforms like Facebook, Wikipedia, YouTube, Amazon, Doordash, and Tinder is to moderate content. Interventions like banning users or deleting comments are carried out thousands of times daily and can potentially improve our onlin ...

Soft robots are envisioned as the next generation of safe biomedical devices in minimally invasive procedures. Yet, the difficulty of processing soft materials currently limits the size, aspect-ratio, manufacturing throughput, as well as, the design comple ...

We study experiment design for unique identification of the causal graph of a system where the graph may contain cycles. The presence of cycles in the structure introduces major challenges for experiment design as, unlike acyclic graphs, learning the skele ...

The capacity to break symmetry and organize activity to move directionally is a fundamental property of eukaryotic cells. To explain the organization of cell-edge activity, models commonly rely on front-to-back gradients of functional components or regulat ...

The segregation of large intruders in an agitated granular system is of high practical relevance, yet the accurate modeling of the segregation (lift) force is challenging as a general formulation of a granular equivalent of a buoyancy force remains elusive ...

In this paper, we aim at unveiling the underlying physical mechanism for transversal optical forces, appearing due to the simultaneous illumination of a spherical object with two plane waves possessing different polarizations. The appearance of such a tran ...

A novel approach is introduced to determine the time evolution of optical forces and torques on arbitrary shape nanostructures by combining Maxwell's stress tensor with the surface integral equation method (SIE). Conventional time averaging of Maxwell’s st ...

Even with correct training, up to 25% of children never master handwriting like their peers. While research shows a correlation between handwriting difficulties and school failure, these difficulties can also impact children in their self esteem and behavi ...

In everyday life humans perform many tasks with other partners which involve coordination, involuntary communication and mutual control adaptation, as the case of carrying objects together with another person. Humanoid robots may help with such activities ...

Compliant grippers are one of the most promising soft robotic devices for industrial tasks. Soft grippers dramatically simplify grasping control because the gripper automatically conforms to the object's shape. A common limitation of soft structures is tha ...

Knowledge of frictional forces acting on the tips of minimally invasive medical devices is important in the design and simulation of such devices. Moreover, several studies have shown that uncontrolled frictional forces can induce damage to organs. The goa ...

In alpine skiing, understanding the interaction between skiers and snow is of primary importance for both injury prevention as well as performance analysis. Risk of injuries is directly linked to constraints undergone by the skier. A force platform placed ...

Robotics teleoperation enables human operators to control the movements of distally located robots. The development of new wearable interfaces as alternatives to hand-held controllers has created new modalities of control, which are more intuitive to use. ...

The dynamic response of angle-ply laminated composite plates traversed by a moving mass or a moving force is investigated. For this purpose, a finite element method based on the first-order shear deformation theory is used. Stationary and adaptive mesh tec ...

This article presents the development and validation of a three-dimensional force and torque semi-analytical model for ironless permanent magnet structures. This method relies on the definition of the magnetic flux density generated by permanent magnets in ...

We adapt an existing asymptotic method to set up a one-dimensional model for the fall of a closed filament in an in finite fluid in the Stokes regime. Starting from the single-layer integral representation of the fluid velocity around the filament, we get, ...

We present a method to determine the location of an applied pressure on a large area, monolithic silicone based capacitive sensor. In contrast to pressure sensor arrays composed of n x n discrete sensors, we utilize a single sensor body with a single instr ...

In this paper, we present a robotic approach to improve the teaching of handwriting using the tangible, haptic-enabled and classroom-friendly Cellulo robots. Our efforts presented here are in line with the philosophy of the Cellulo platform: we aim to crea ...
