We present an original analytical determination of the force acting on the moving coil in an electromagnetic actuator. The actuator magnetic field is solved analytically by Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) mapping. The SC integral is solved analytically using the ...

We propose to control the motion of nanoparticles using phase-gradient metasurfaces. The latter are used to generate surface waves, which put the particles into motion, when illuminated by a normally incident plane wave. We present an initial study of the ...

Currently microsystems consist of more and more functionalities in even smaller volumes. Components size has then to be reduced as well, coming through micro- and then nanoscale. The industrial equipments dedicated to their fabrication and assembly have co ...

Tasks routinely executed by humans involve sequences of actions performed with high dexterity and coordination. Fully specifying these actions such that a robot could replicate the task is often difficult. Furthermore the uncertainties introduced by the us ...

Cell migration is a fundamental property of all animal cells which is involved in processes such as embryogenesis, immune response, tissue regeneration and cancer metastasis. Directional migration requires cell polarization which could happen in response t ...

We report a novel biodegradable piezoelectric composite fabricated from paper and the piezoelectric salt, sodium potassium tartrate tetrahydrate (Rochelle salt, which we term PiezoSalt). The piezoelectric composite is non-toxic and is fabricated free of en ...

Combination of glass nanocapillaries with optical tweezers allowed us to detect DNA-protein complexes in physiological conditions. In this system, a protein bound to DNA is characterized by a simultaneous change of the force and ionic current signals from ...

Bilateral Master-Slave force reflecting servomechanisms are very interesting and useful devices. The basic principle of these systems is too realise a force and position transformation between the two mechanisms. This paper presents the design of the multi ...

Dynamics is a central aspect of ski jumping, particularly during take-off and stable flight. Currently, measurement systems able to measure ski jumping dynamics (e.g., 3D cameras, force plates) are complex and only available in few research centres worldwi ...

We analyse the force balance on a cylindrical drop in a Hele-Shaw cell, subjected to a Marangoni flow caused by a surface tension gradient. Depth-averaged Stokes equations, called Brinkman equations, are introduced and a general closed form solution is obt ...
