We study the drainage of a viscous liquid film coating the outside of a solid horizontal cylinder, where gravity acts vertically. We focus on the limit of large Ohnesorge numbers Oh, where inertia is negligible compared to viscous effects. We first study t ...

Multiply lensed images of a same source experience a relative time delay in the arrival of photons due to the path length difference and the different gravitational potentials the photons travel through. This effect can be used to measure absolute distance ...

Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we identify a class of CFT operators which represent diff-invariant and approximately local observables in the gravitational dual. Provided that the bulk state breaks all asymptotic symmetries, we show that these operator ...

Hydraulic fractures are driven by an internal fluid pressure exceeding the minimum compressive stress, propagating in a direction perpendicular to the latter. This class of tensile fractures has gained interest over the last fifty years due to the developm ...

This thesis is dedicated to the analysis of a subclass of interfacial flows, columnlike free-interface flows, from two view angles: (i) the symmetry breaking under geometry-induced or external forces, (ii) their stability against infinitesimal disturbances ...

In certain cases of astronomical data analysis, the meaningful physical quantity to extract is the ratio R between two data sets. Examples include the lensing ratio, the interloper rate in spectroscopic redshift samples, and the decay rate of gravitational ...

We study numerically and theoretically the gravity-driven flow of a viscous liquid film coating the inner side of a horizontal cylindrical tube and surrounding a shear-free dynamically inert gaseous core. The liquid-gas interface is prone to the Rayleigh-P ...

Dimensionality provides a clear fingerprint on the dispersion of infrared-active, polar-optical phonons. For these phonons, the local dipoles parametrized by the Born effective charges drive the LO-TO splitting of bulk materials; this splitting actually br ...

The forced response of rigid rotors, supported by herringbone-grooved gas journal bearings are investigated numerically and experimentally. The rotor configurations are varied by using end cylinders, attached at both sides of the shaft. Three rotors with d ...

We study causality in gravitational systems beyond the classical limit. Using on-shell methods, we consider the 1-loop corrections from charged particles to the photon energy-momentum tensor - the self-stress - that controls the quantum interaction between ...

Spectroscopic surveys aim to map large fractions of the Universe to study the Large Scale Structures (LSS). LSS evolution traces the distribution of matter as a result of the tension between the expansion of the Universe and the gravitational forces, which ...

Classical soft graviton theorem gives the gravitational wave-form at future null infinity at late retarded time u for a general classical scattering. The large u expansion has three known universal terms: the constant term, the term proportional to 1/u and ...

It is well known since the works of Utiyama and Kibble that the gravitational force can be obtained by gauging the Poincare group, which puts gravity on the same footing as the standard model fields. The resulting theory-Einstein-Cartan gravity-inevitably ...

Liquid-gas two-phase flow in flow channels of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells has been investigated extensively in the literature; however, a comparison between the order of the magnitude of the forces occurring within the flow channels has not b ...

We revisit analytical methods for constraining the nonperturbative S-matrix of unitary, relativistic, gapped theories in d >= 3 spacetime dimensions. We assume extended analyticity of the two-to-two scattering amplitude and use it together with elastic uni ...

A turbidity current is a particle-laden current driven by density differences due to suspended sediment particles. Turbidity currents can transport large amounts of sediment down slopes over great distances, and play a significant role in fluvial, lake and ...

Dark matter (DM) can consist of very light bosons behaving as a classical scalar field that experiences coherent oscillations. The presence of this DM field would perturb the dynamics of celestial bodies, either because the (oscillating) DM stress tensor m ...

We show that the commonly accepted statement that sound waves do not transport mass is only true at linear order. Using effective field theory techniques, we confirm the result found by Nicolis and Penco [Phys. Rev. 13 97, 134516 (2018)] for zero -temperat ...

This paper proposes a novel concept for a loop thermosyphon cooling system, designed for the transistor module of a transformer. The thermosyphon uses a free convection cooled condenser, making the system completely passive, i.e. no energy consumption is n ...

Estimates of the Hubble constant from different cosmological probes produce discrepant results in the framework of the standard cosmological model. In order to assess whether this tension is coming from unaccounted systematic errors, or is hinting towards ...
