Since the dawn of humanity, human beings seeked to light their surroundings for their well-being, security and development. The efficiency of ancient lighting devices, e.g. oil lamps or candles, was in the order of 0.03-0.04% and jumped to 0.4-0.6% with th ...

We present a narrow-linewidth second-harmonic source based on a laser diode injection locked to an optically poled silicon nitride microresonator. The device is a compact, highly-coherent dual-wavelength source, with high conversion efficiency up to 280%/W ...

Combining optical gain in direct-bandgap III-V materials with tunable optical feedback offered by advanced photonic integrated circuits is key to chip-scale external-cavity lasers (ECL), offering wideband tunability along with low optical linewidths. Exter ...

Early works(1) and recent advances in thin-film lithium niobate (LiNbO3) on insulator have enabled low-loss photonic integrated circuits(2,3), modulators with improved half-wave voltage(4,5), electro-optic frequency combs(6) and on-chip electro-optic devic ...

Cavities concentrate light and enhance its interaction with matter. Confining to microscopic volumes is necessary for many applications but space constraints in such cavities limit the design freedom. Here we demonstrate stable optical microcavities by cou ...

The availability of thin-film lithiumniobate on insulator (LNOI) and advances in processing have led to the emergence of fully integrated LiNbO3 electro-optic devices. Yet to date, LiNbO3 photonic integrated circuits have mostly been fabricated using non-s ...

We report on a practical method for developing InGaN-based edge emitting laser diodes of cavity length down to 45 mu m. Samples consisting of one uncoated cleaved facet and one etched facet coated with a high-reflectivity (HR) dielectric distributed Bragg ...

Materials properties are strictly dependent on their microstructure. The internal symmetries and the disposition of the constituting atoms of a material, which depend on its crystallographic structure, greatly affect its response to mechanical, electromagn ...

We report broad bandwidth blue superluminescent light-emitting diodes (SLEDs) based on a short-cavity active region. The dependencies of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) output power and gain bandwidth on cavity length were investigated in devices whos ...

Diamond is an exceptional material - hard, stiff, transparent, which makes it ideal for the fabrication of optical and mechanical systems that take advantage of these properties. Diamond is not only "better", but it offers the possibility of integrating br ...

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of ...

Thermal motion of a room-temperature mechanical resonator typically dominates the quantum backaction of its position measurement. This is a longstanding barrier for exploring cavity optomechanics at room temperature. In order to enter the quantum regime of ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are surface electromagnetic modes that propagate at the interface between a multilayer substrate and a homogeneous external medium. The optical field of the surface mode is confined near the surface of the multilayer. This vertic ...

We report on the single mode emission power enhancement of 1.3-mu m VCSELs by adjusting the reflectivity of the top GaAs-based DBR for output coupling optimization using selective removal of Bragg reflector layers. Devices with record single mode power of ...

In this paper, we review recent advances in optical microinstruments based on distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) focusing mainly on two application areas: spectrometry and profilometry. For spectrometry applications, we consider state-of-the-art architectu ...

Recent developments of self-injection locking of a DFB laser with an ultra-high Q resonator have enabled unprecedented low-noise performance of coherent light sources. We review the demonstration of ultra-narrow linewidth laser and microcombs in integrated ...

Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities combine ultra-high quality (Q) factors with small mode volumes, resulting in an enhancement of the light-matter interaction at the nanoscale, which, beyond fundamental studies is advantageous for countless applications in ph ...

Group III-nitrides have been considered a promising choice for the realization of optoelectronic devices since 1970. Since the first demonstration of the high-brightness blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by Shuji Nakamura and coworkers, the fabrication of ...

The III-nitride semiconductor material system - (InAlGa)N - is of highest interest for optoelectronic applications due to its direct bandgap, tunable from the ultraviolet to the infrared spectral range. The most well-known are white light-emitting diodes, ...

The properties of semiconductors heterostructures of nanoscopic dimensions change from that of bulk material according to the rules of quantum mechanics. The planar quantum wells (QWs) are widely used in various diode and laser devices thanks to the relati ...
