This work addresses the need for precise control of thin film sputtering processes to enable thin film material tailoring on the example of zinc tin nitride (ZTN) thin films deposited via microwave plasma-assisted high power reactive magnetron sputtering ( ...

This thesis is dedicated to developing innovative methodologies that improve elemental quantification in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). The primary motivation stems from a geochemistry pr ...

Successful application of diffusion chronometry is based on detailed knowledge of diffusion parameters obtained from laboratory experiments, which also need to be upscaled to be applied to natural samples. While generally applicable, several examples of di ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are of great interest in many fields due to their astonishing properties at an atomic level thickness. Many fundamentally different methods to synthesize 2D materials, such as exfoliation or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), h ...

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) extracts chemical, elemental, or isotopic information about a localized area of a solid target by performing mass spectrometry on secondary ions sputtered from its surface by the impact of a beam of charged particles. ...

The present study evaluates the ionization efficiency (IE) of linear and branched C2–C14 dicarboxylic acids (DCAs) by electrospray ionization (ESI) under different conditions. The influence of the concentration of organic modifier (MeOH); mobile phase addi ...

Both seismic observations of dense low shear velocity regions and models of magma ocean crystallization and mantle dynamics support enrichment of iron in Earth’s lowermost mantle. Physical properties of iron-rich lower mantle heterogeneities in the modern ...

We carried out a series of silicate fractional crystallization experiments at lower mantle pressures using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Phase relations and the compositional evolution of the cotectic melt and equilibrium solids along the liquid lin ...

This study evaluates the secondary electron (SE) dopant contrast in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and helium ion microscopy (HIM) on boron implanted silicon sample. Complementary techniques like secondary ion mass spectrometry and electrochemical capa ...

The characterization of biomolecules plays a central role in biomedical research. The development of state-of-the-art technologies is needed to make such analyses faster, more sensitive, and more accurate. While mass spectrometry continues to play a centra ...

Seismic observations have suggested the presence of two Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle whose nature and origin are still debated. Several studies have tried to infer their potential composition using seismic observation ...

Identification of isomeric biomolecules remains a challenging analytical problem. A recently developed spectroscopic method that combines UV photofragmentation and mass spectrometry for fingerprinting of cold ions (2D UV-MS), has already demonstrated its h ...

The photoisomerization behavior of styryl 9M, a common dye used in material sciences, is investigated using tandem ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) coupled with laser spectroscopy. Styryl 9M has two alkene linkages, potentially allowing for four geometric i ...

Polysilicon recombination junctions whose n-type bottom layers double as a passivating contact to the silicon surface are investigated. Such recombination junctions are a key element in the interconnection of tandem devices with a silicon bottom cell, and ...

Crystallization timescales in subvolcanic systems and the consequences of interaction between ascending magmas and gases remain largely unconstrained, as do links between these processes and monitoring signals at restless volcanoes. We apply diffusion chro ...

Electronic states of iron in the lower mantle's dominant mineral, (Mg,Fe,Al)(Fe,Al,Si)O-3 bridgmanite, control physical properties of the mantle including density, elasticity, and electrical and thermal conductivity. However, the determination of electroni ...

Incorporation of alkali metals such as Cs+, Rb+, and K+ into hybrid organic-inorganic halide lead perovskites (HOIPs) generally improves the optoelectronic properties of HOIPs. However, it is still uncertain how alkali metals interact and distribute within ...

The heat flux across the core-mantle boundary (Q(CMB)) is the key parameter to understand the Earth's thermal history and evolution. Mineralogical constraints of the Q(CMB) require deciphering contributions of the lattice and radiative components to the th ...

Current mass spectrometry techniques for the online measurement of organic aerosol (OA) composition are subjected to either thermal/ionization-induced artifacts or limited mass resolving power, hindering accurate molecular characterization. Here, we combin ...

Across the seismogenic zone, the transition from brittle to plastic deformation corresponds to a semibrittle regime where brittle fracturing and plastic flow coexist at high strength conditions. Thorough experimental investigations on brittle-plastic trans ...
