The challenge of power exhaust of the high heat and particle fluxes foreseen for ITER and the forthcoming nuclear fusion reactors can be mitigated by operating in a detached divertor regime. This regime has been the object of three decades of studies, as i ...

Solving native structures of such large molecules, like biomolecules, is often challenging, particularly due to the potentially infinite number of non-covalent interactions with water. In this thesis, we report the use of cold ion gas-phase action spectros ...

This work focusses on the pilot run of a simulation campaign aimed at investigating the spectroscopic capabilities of the Euclid NearInfrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP), in terms of continuum and emission line detection in the context of galaxy evo ...

Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are absorption features seen in optical and infrared spectra of stars and extragalactic objects that are probably caused by large and complex molecules in the galactic interstellar medium (ISM). Here we investigate the Gal ...

Aerosols play a significant role in the atmosphere through affecting the radiative budget, cloud condensation nuclei activity, and visibility. They also cause adverse health effects leading to premature deaths. A major fraction of aerosols is organic matte ...

The structuring of mid-IR materials, such as chalcogenide glass (ChG), at the micro and nano scales, is of high interest for the fabrication of photonic devices in general, and for spectroscopy applications in particular. One efficient method for producing ...

Combining all the benefits of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in a chip scale spectroscopic sensor looks promising for mobile and wearable platform development. Dual-comb spectroscopy enables downconversion of optical absorption spectra into ...

The middle-infrared (mid-IR) spectral range hosts the most intense roto-vibrational absorption lines of many important molecules. Particularly, mid-IR spectroscopy constitutes a unique tool for identifying and quantifying molecular species through their mi ...

The characterisation of cement paste microstructure is an important step towards understanding durability mechanisms in cementitious materials. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) is a widely used technique ...

The possibility of performing electron density and temperature measurements in a high power helicon plasma is a crucial issue in the framework of the AWAKE (Advanced WAKefield Experiment) project, which demonstrates acceleration of particles using GeV m(-1 ...

The Bethe Salpeter equation (BSE) can be applied to compute from first-principles optical spectra that include the effects of screened electron hole interactions. As input, BSE calculations require single-particle states, quasiparticle energy levels, and t ...

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of many different substances and requires a suite of instruments for chemical characterization. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a technique that can provide quantification of multi ...

Peak fitting (PF) and partial least squares (PLS) regression have been independently developed for estimation of functional groups (FGs) from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of ambient aerosol collected on Teflon filters. PF is a model that quant ...

An electrochemical sensor is described for the determination of L-dopa (levodopa; 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine). An inkjet-printed carbon nanotube (IJPCNT) electrode was modified with manganese dioxide microspheres by drop-casting. They coating was character ...

We present a nanophotonic method capable of detecting mid-infrared molecular fingerprints without the need for spectrometry, frequency scanning, or moving mechanical parts. We leverage dielectric metasurfaces featuring ultra-sharp resonances each tuned to ...

Directly accessing the middle infrared, the molecular functional group spectral region, via supercontinuum generation processes based on turn-key fiber lasers offers the undeniable advantage of simplicity and robustness. Recently, the assessment of the coh ...

AIRSpec is a platform consisting of several chemometric packages developed for analysis of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of atmospheric aerosols. The packages are accessible through a browser-based interface, which also generates the necessary ...

Tailoring nanoscale light concentration and electromagnetic near-field enhancement over a broad spectral range is crucial for many photonics applications such as infrared spectroscopy, photodetection, and light harvesting. So far, broadband light enhanceme ...

Histidine remained the last aromatic amino acid for which the intrinsic spectroscopic properties and structures were obscure. We measured the UV and IR spectra of protonated histidine, isolated in the gas phase, using photofragmentation cold ion spectrosco ...

Density functional theory-based calculations of the (10,0) zigzag single-walled carbon nanotube with hydrogen chemisorbed exohedrally show that electron pairing and strain minimization lead hydrogen atoms to cluster and preferentially sit in axial configur ...
