The constant urge to construct new molecules in an economical and sustainable fashion led to the development of numerous metal-catalyzed transformations. Organocatalysts consisting of abundant and more sustainable elements offer an elegant solution to over ...

Alkynes are found in a multitude of natural or synthetic bioactive compounds. In addition to the capacity of these chemical motifs to impact the physicochemical properties of a molecule of interest, the well-established reactivity of alkynes makes them ide ...

Examples for applications of nitrous oxide in organic synthesis remain rare up until today. First mayor contributions of our group were published in 2012, when nitrous oxide was successfully captured by N-heterocyclic carbenes. Subsequent studies investiga ...

Azepanes are important seven-membered heterocycles, which are present in numerous natural and synthetic compounds. However, the development of convergent synthetic methods to access them remains challenging. Herein, we report the Lewis acid catalyzed (4+3) ...

The development of radical-based remote C(sp3)-H functionalizations of redox-active alcohol derivatives, oxidative cycloaddition and rearrangement transformations under visible light photocatalysis constitute the basis of this thesis. The first chapter des ...

Photoredox catalysis has become a powerful tool for chemists. However, the reliance on expensive Ir and Ru based photoredox catalysts (PC) motivates research for more sustainable options. Copper complexes based on favorable photophysical properties, high a ...

a-Amino ketones and 1,2-amino alcohols are important structural motifs in organic chemistry, that can be observed in natural products, pharmaceutically and bioactive compounds. For these reasons, they constitute privileged targets for the development of ne ...

The development of sustainable, renewable and economic chemical processes lies in the centre of todayâ s global energy challenge. Like in plants, artificial photosynthesis offers an auspicious solution in harvesting solar energy and storing it in chemical ...

The synthesis, structure, and reactivity with CO2 and CS2 of new U(IV) complexes with a redox-active Schiff base are reported. The reaction of UI3 with the heptadentate Schiff base ligand 2,2',2 ''-tris(salicylideneimino)-triethylamine (trensal) did not le ...

Reactions between N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the trityl cation, [Ph3C]+, give covalent adducts of type [NHC–CPh3]+ and/or [NHC–C6H5–CPh2]+. EPR spectroscopy, UV-Vis analyses, and trapping experiments imply that adduct formation involves carbene rad ...

Aromatic compounds containing triazenyl groups (N3RR′) have a profound impact on synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry. In contrast, the chemistry of vinyl and alkynyl triazenes was a largely uncharted territory until recently. The situation has change ...

The thesis describes a simple approach for N-formylation of amines with CO2 and hydrosilane reducing agents, the use of organic salts as N-formylation catalysts, their physical properties required for high catalytic activity and their role in the catalytic ...

Understanding the structural modification experienced by the Mn4CaO5 oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II along the Kok-Joliot's cycle has been a challenge for both theory and experiments since many decades. In particular, differential infrared spectr ...

Phenolic moieties are common functional groups in organic micropollutants and in dissolved organic matter, and are exposed to ozone during drinking water and wastewater ozonation. Although unsubstituted phenol is known to yield potentially genotoxic p-benz ...

Carbo- and heterocyclic structures containing nitrogen-substituted stereocenters are recurrent structural motifs in natural and bioactive compounds, therefore constituting a privileged class of synthetic targets. In this regard, substituted three- and four ...

Light harvesting from the Sun by antenna complexes surrounding the reaction center of Photosystem II represents the first step of the natural oxygenic photosynthesis performed by plants, algae and cyanobacteria. The excitation energy derived from the sunli ...

Nowadays, the fine chemical industry requires increasingly faster time-to-market as well as economically efficient and safe processes. In addition, the growing product variety needs more versatile production plants able to produce from small amounts up to ...

The Mn4CaO5 cluster of photosystem II promotes a crucial step in the oxygenic photosynthesis, namely, the water-splitting reaction. The structure of such cluster in the S-1 state of the Kok-Joliot's cycle has been recently resolved by femtosecond X-ray fre ...

The reaction center protein is the unit in the photosynthetic organisms in which the primary events of the photoelectric energy conversion take place during photosynthesis. When the photochemistry following the excitation of the reaction center by light is ...

This thesis describes novel methods for and investigations into C–C and C–N bond formation reactions. Chapter 1 gives a very brief overview of established strategies for the formation of new C–C bonds in organic synthesis. In chapter 2, a multi‐step one‐po ...
