The failure of a weak snow layer underlying a cohesive slab is the primary step in the release process of a dry snow slab avalanche. The complex and heterogeneous microstructure of snow limits our understanding of failure initiation inside the weak layer, ...

Recent Advances: Herein, we focus on the first step of this process, electrophile sensing. Electrophile sensing is typically a deceptively simple reaction between the thiol of a protein cysteine, of which there are around 200,000 in the human proteome, and ...

This thesis comprises the study of two types of 2D materials, those stabilized by non-covalent and those by covalent interactions. They are synthesized and studied on well-defined metallic surfaces in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). The self-assembly of terephtha ...

N2 is a cheap and widely available but very unreactive molecule. Notably, the only industrial process for the conversion of dinitrogen is the Haber-Bosch process to form ammonia, but under very harsh conditions (high temperature and pressure). Here, we rev ...

At low pH, underwater adherence between poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels and poly(acrylic acid) brushes is due to the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds. The effect of the key parameters controlling the formation of these interactions (contact time ...

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 90, 125102 ( 2014)], we showed that the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAx) gives accurate total energies for a diverse set of systems including the high and low density regime of the homogeneous electron gas, th ...

Uranium nitrides are important materials with potential for application as fuels for nuclear power generation, and as highly active catalysts. Molecular nitride compounds could provide important insight into the nature of the uranium–nitride bond, but curr ...

Molecular nitrogen (N-2) is cheap and widely available, but its unreactive nature is a challenge when attempting to functionalize it under mild conditions with other widely available substrates (such as carbon monoxide, CO) to produce value-added compounds ...

Second-order rate constants (k(O3)) for the reaction of ozone with micropollutants are essential parameters for the assessment of micropollutant elimination efficiency during ozonation in water and wastewater treatment. Prediction models for k(O3) were dev ...

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterisation of the first terminal uranium(V) sulfide and a related UV trithiocarbonate complex supported by sterically demanding tris(tert-butoxy)siloxide ligands. The reaction of the potassium-bound UV imido comple ...

The industrial production of aromatic amines, essential intermediates for the synthesis of several drugs, dyes, pigments and agrochemicals, requires the use of heterogeneous catalysis. These molecules were formerly produced by the Béchamp reduction, a non- ...

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) react at ambient conditions with nitrous oxide to give covalent adducts. In the crystal, all compounds show a bent N2O group connected via the N-atom to the former carbene carbon atom. Most adducts are stable at room temperat ...

Hydrogen bonding in ionic liquids based on the 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium cation (C(2)OHmim) and various anions (A) of differing H-bond acceptor strength, viz. hexafluorophosphate PF6, tetrafluoroborate BF4, bis-(trifluoro ...

Alkene functionality can be found in the majority of natural products, drugs, catalysts and organic materials. Therefore, methods of C-C double bond formation constitute a cornerstone of organic synthesis. Selective formation of either (Z)- or (E)-isomer i ...
