Hazardous chemicals excruciatingly contaminated water, air, and soil for the past few decades. Eco-friendly techniques to clean and or destroy these harmful chemicals is an urgent requirement at this moment. In this direction, a large number of methodologi ...

Renewable energy supply and energy storage in a closed materials cycle are the urgent global challenges of the 21st century. Carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation over catalysts is a method to produce synthetic fuels from renewable energy in a CO2 neutral cyc ...

Density functional perturbation theory is used to study the phonon dispersion relations at the (111) surface of the topological insulator Sb2Te3. Inelastic Helium atom scattering experiments at the (111) surface of the similar Bi2Se3 topological insulator ...

Fe, Co, Ni and Cu are the main non-noble industrially significant catalysts in the CO2 and CO gas phase hydrogenation reaction towards hydrocarbons and alcohols. These catalysts are typically supported on metal oxides such as SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3 and ZnO, in ...

This thesis is divided in seven main chapters including an introduction about the state of the art in the field, four main chapters describing the main part of the work, a short insight on the implications of the presented results for other research projec ...

Substantial signal enhancements achieved by using parahydrogen in catalytic hydrogenations are powerful tools for mechanistic studies of chemical reactions involving molecular H-2. Potentially, this technique can be extended to other reaction classes, prov ...

The synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 is a well-established reaction, whereas the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from diols and CO2 is considerably more challenging, and few efficient catalysts are available. Here, we describe heterocycl ...

Monodispersed Pd nanoparticles (8, 11, and 13 nm in iameter) as confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy were prepared via the reverse microemulsion method and deposited on structured supports consisting of carbon nanofibers (CNF) grow ...

This thesis comprises the study of two types of 2D materials, those stabilized by non-covalent and those by covalent interactions. They are synthesized and studied on well-defined metallic surfaces in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). The self-assembly of terephtha ...

We investigate the structure and mobility of single self-interstitial atom and vacancy defects in body-centered-cubic transition metals forming groups 5B (vanadium, niobium, and tantalum) and 6B (chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten) of the Periodic Table. D ...

Alkynes have found widespread applications in synthetic chemistry, biology, and materials sciences. In recent years, methods based on electrophilic alkynylation with hypervalent iodine reagents have made acetylene synthesis more flexible and efficient, but ...

In this article we highlight some of the recent developments in the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of alkenes and arenes. The traditional types of water-soluble catalysts applied in aqueous media are outlined together with recent trends towards the developmen ...

Nanocomposite thin films exhibit interesting optical properties which differ from those of the pure constituents. Effective medium theories are used to model the dielectric function of the nanocomposite materials. We give an introduction to the theories of ...

This thesis is concerned with supramolecular architectures assembled at metal surfaces. The investigations pursued two objectives. On the one hand, the focus was placed on the fabrication of low-dimensional surface-supported network structures by applying ...

Iron(III) bisoxazolinylphenylamido (bopa) pincer complexes are efficient precatalysts for the cross-coupling of nonactivated primary and secondary alkyl halides with phenyl Grignard reagents. The reactions proceed at room temperature in moderate to excelle ...

The structure sensitivity of acetylene hydrogenation was studied over size-controlled cubic and octahedral Pd nanocrystals (NCs) supported on ZnO and SiO2. Acetylene hydrogenation was found to be structure sensitive [with Pd(111) in octahedra being more ac ...

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are particularly well suited for storing the intermittent excess supply of renewable electricity; so-called “junk” electricity. Conventional RFBs are charged and discharged electrochemically, with electricity stored as chemical ...
