Carefully extracting reinforced concrete (RC) elements from soon-to-be demolished structures and reusing them as load-bearing components is an emerging circular low-carbon alternative to building new structures. As floor construction typically accounts for ...

The seismic assessment of existing steel structures necessitates the development of practice- oriented engineering models for use in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis procedures. These models should encompass the full range of the anticipated nonlinear ...

The objective of this paper is to investigate a new numerical method for the approximation of the self-diffusion matrix of a tagged particle process defined on a grid. While standard numerical methods make use of long-time averages of empirical means of de ...

Prequalified beam-to-column connections in steel moment resisting frames usually concentrate inelastic deformations in the steel beam ends. As such, nonlinear geo-metric instabilities (i.e., local buckling) may occur in these regions at modest lateral drif ...

Higher-order asymptotics provide accurate approximations for use in parametric statistical modelling. In this thesis, we investigate using higher-order approximations in two-specific settings, with a particular emphasis on the tangent exponential model. ...

In this thesis, we propose and analyze novel numerical algorithms for solving three different high-dimensional problems involving tensors. The commonality of these problems is that the tensors can potentially be well approximated in low-rank formats. Ident ...

This paper presents the experimental results from nine full-scale concrete-filled double-skin tubular (CFDST) beam-columns. The test specimens exploited two fabrication strategies, featuring either hollow steel inner skins with corrugated geometry or ultra ...

Steel beams with reduced beam section (RBS) are often used as part of prequalified connections in seismic regions. However, RBS connections are not as common in Europe. Reasons relate to easiness in fabrication, which requires on-site welding, and the seis ...

As historical stone masonry structures are vulnerable and prone to damage in earthquakes, investigating their structural integrity is important to reduce injuries and casualties while preserving their historical value. Stone masonry is a composite material ...

Capillarity plays a crucial role in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from nutrient delivery in plants to functional textiles for wear comfort or thermal heat pipes for heat dissipation. Unlike nano- or microfluidic systems with well-defined por ...

The fib Model Code 2010 (MC2010) contains a semi-empirical formulation for the local bond-slip relationship for both pull-out and splitting failure modes (derived from short pull-out tests), as well as a semi-empirical formulation of the steel stress that ...

Numerical models that can simulate coupled geometric instabilities in steel beam-columns are required for the seismic assessment of certain steel moment-resisting frames. Reliably simulating coupled instabilities requires that the steel material is precise ...

Riveted railway bridges are commonly considered as being “old”, having fatigue damage and are therefore replaced. While this practice should be by now obsolete by using novel engineering methods like structural monitoring, prolongation of the service durat ...

Tensile test data for structural steels are ubiquitous. Yet, the information monotonic loading provides with respect to the material's characteristics is limited. Notably, features of inelastic response to cyclic loading, such as the Bauschinger eect, can ...

Excessive self-weight and difficulty in construction are the main issues confronted by super-long-span arch bridges. To address these issues, a conceptual design of steel-ultra-high performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) composite truss arch bridge ...

In this thesis we explore uncertainty quantification of forward and inverse problems involving differential equations. Differential equations are widely employed for modeling natural and social phenomena, with applications in engineering, chemistry, meteor ...

We propose Kernel Predictive Control (KPC), a learning-based predictive control strategy that enjoys deterministic guarantees of safety. Noise-corrupted samples of the unknown system dynamics are used to learn several models through the formalism of non-pa ...

Monitoring fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) during their production and operation is becoming crucial to track the performance of the final parts and optimize the overall life cycle. The challenges associated with integrating multifunctional sens ...

This thesis focuses on the numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) with an emphasis on first and second-order fully nonlinear PDEs. The main goal is the design of numerical methods to solve a variety of equations such as orthogonal maps ...

Seismic performance assessment of new and existing steel structures based on nonlinear static (pushover) analysis necessitates the use of engineering‐oriented models that trace the nonlinear response of structural steel elements under static and cyclic loa ...
