In this paper, we present the first ultra-low-noise, self-injection locked (SIL) laser with frequency agility based on the monolithic integration of a low-loss silicon nitride (Si3N4) photonic spiral cavity with an aluminum nitride (AlN) actuator. The self ...

Extensive research has been conducted on fault diagnosis of planetary gearboxes using vibration signals and deep learning (DL) approaches. However, DL-based methods are susceptible to the domain shift problem caused by varying operating conditions of the g ...

We enable the estimation of the per-axon axial diffusivity from single encoding, strongly diffusion-weighted, pulsed gradient spin echo data. Additionally, we improve the estimation of the per-axon radial diffusivity compared to estimates based on spherica ...

Objective. Powered lower-limb prostheses relying on decoding motor intentions from non-invasive sensors, like electromyographic (EMG) signals, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputee subjects. However, the optimal combination of high decod ...

Residential ventilative cooling via natural ventilation is influenced by outdoor air pollution. However, relative to climate, outdoor air pollution is not comprehensively considered in determining the ventilative cooling potential of buildings. To assess t ...

The role of deep defects and their physical origin in InGaN/GaN LED are still widely investigated and debated, in particular their impact on the electrical and optical characteristics and on the reliability of the device. In this paper we evaluate the elec ...

Energy tunnels allow the harvesting of untapped heat at shallow depths in the underground to meet the thermal energy requirements of buildings and infrastructures over large areas. Such heat can derive from two sources: the ground surrounding energy tunnel ...

We investigate the persistence of micro-contacts between two elastic random rough surfaces by means of a simple model for quasi-static sliding. Contact clusters are calculated with the Boundary Element Method, then surfaces are repeatedly displaced to stud ...

We perform a combined experimental and computational investigation of the clove hitch knot. We develop a physical model for the clove hitch by tying an elastic rod onto a rigid cylinder. In the experiments, we characterize the mechanical performance, geome ...

The mechanical behaviours of unsaturated soils are highly related to the water content and pore water and air distributions. Under the context of climate change, geo-disasters related to soil moisture change attract more and more research attentions. Due t ...

Fourier transforms are an often necessary component in many computational tasks, and can be computed efficiently through the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm. However, many applications involve an underlying continuous signal, and a more natural choi ...

Photonic integrated systems can be harnessed for fast and efficient optical telecommunication and metrology technologies. Here the authors develop a dual-soliton microcomb technique for massively parallel coherent laser ranging that requires only a single ...

Recent works have shown that the state-feedback decoupling of capacitor voltage allows for drastic bandwidth enlarging of current controllers for grid-forming converters in islanded microgrids. Furthermore, Smith predictor and lead compensation have been a ...

Sparse recovery is a powerful tool that plays a central role in many applications, including source estimation in radio astronomy, direction of arrival estimation in acoustics or radar, super-resolution microscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Conventional a ...

Integrating functions on discrete domains into neural networks is key to developing their capability to reason about discrete objects. But, discrete domains are (I) not naturally amenable to gradient-based optimization, and (II) incompatible with deep lear ...

In a variety of fields, in particular those involving imaging and optics, we often measure signals whose phase is missing or has been irremediably distorted. Phase retrieval attempts to recover the phase information of a signal from the magnitude of its Fo ...

The theme of this thesis revolves around three important manifestations of light, namely its corpuscular, wave and electromagnetic nature. Our goal is to exploit these principles to analyze, design and build imaging modalities by developing new signal proc ...

The forms of U-shaped UHPFRC beams have not been investigated for the highway footbridge. Compared with the traditional section forms, the U-shaped UHPFRC beams can reduce the material consumption under the condition of providing the same bearing capacity. ...

Objective. Optic nerve's intraneural stimulation is an emerging neuroprosthetic approach to provide artificial vision to totally blind patients. An open question is the possibility to evoke individual non-overlapping phosphenes via selective intraneural op ...
